Krishna Rao is the CFO of Anthropic, and this is his first podcast appearance. He joined the company two years ago when run-rate revenue was about $250M. Today it is $30B. He has helped raise ~$75B and is responsible for the procurement and allocation of compute. I feel lucky we get to hear what it is like to sit inside a company this consequential at a moment this pivotal. We discuss: - The cone of uncertainty - How he allocates compute across Trainium, TPUs, and GPUs - What investors misunderstand about model companies - Why the returns to frontier intelligence keep rising - Platform vs application and where Anthropic builds its own products - How Anthropic uses Claude internally I have asked my closing question about the kindest thing more than 500 times. Krishna's answer is one I have never heard before. Enjoy! His name is Govind Jaiswal. He was born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Narayan, had once owned 35 rickshaws. Then his wife fell gravely ill. Narayan sold 20 of them to pay for her treatment. She died in 1995. He sold 14 more to send Govind to Delhi to prepare for UPSC. By the time Govind reached Delhi, his father was down to one rickshaw, which he pulled himself every day. The family lived in a single room near the railway station in Varanasi. Electricity was unreliable. Govind had studied at a government school and a modest college in the city. When he was 11 years old, he went to play at a wealthy friend’s house. He was insulted and thrown out because his father was a rickshaw puller. An older friend explained to him how the world works and told him that unless his circumstances changed, he could expect this treatment his entire life. That day, he decided he would become an IAS officer. In Delhi, he taught mathematics to junior students to earn money. On some days, he skipped meals to save what little he had. He studied in public libraries. He prepared entirely in Hindi medium. He told himself he could not afford a second attempt. His father had sold everything. There was no plan B. In 2006, Govind Jaiswal cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in his first attempt. He was 22 years old. All India Rank 48. The first thing he did with his first salary was pay for his father’s medical treatment for a leg injury sustained from years of pulling rickshaws. He said this, “Anyone who understands my circumstances will know I had no other option. I chose the only path I was left with. I worked hard on my studies.” Follow for stories India deserves to remember.

When legendary Manna Dey was asked to sing non-Bengali song… He chose Gujarati folk song “Helo Maro Sambhalo”! Observe his pronunciation of ણ and ળ. More clear than of many Gujaratis.

Within hours, social media dug out videos of Dr. Singh and P. Chidambaram asking to reduce gold imports Liberal journos left aghast ... now crying that UPA lost Exactly the point UPA barely got any criticism ... these comments went almost unnoticed then Culture of aggressive trolling of every word began only in Modi era Congress cannot even imagine the level of scrutiny that PM Modi has faced for 12 years

I have visited multiple customers in Western Europe who start work as early as 6 am and go home by 2. Some come by 7 and go by 3. Almost nobody starts later than 8. While at work, its only work. No personal calls, no random talks. They take their coffees to their table and continue working as they sip their coffee. They leave when they are supposed to leave. No unnecessary overtime and definitely no “oh look, i work so hard” gimmicks. Even China works this way. 1 Chinese employee does as much work as 4 Indian employees. Thats their level of efficiency. That is also how a team of 20-25 people can generate revenue of over 10 million Euros in western Europe without breaking a sweat. The old employee I engaged in Poland was one such professional from whom I learnt a lot about ethics and etiquette. We had a deal that he would come after hours of his new job by about 3:15 pm and work till sun down. And as per his word, man would pull into the drive way every day between 3:10- 3:15 pm. He would go change to work clothes, get to the shop floor, place his phone on the work table and get to work. We would work together for the next 2.5-3 hours in which duration he wouldn’t even as much look towards his phone, let alone pick it up to ‘take a break’. And he is one of the most knowledgeable people i have met about cnc machining till date. No air of arrogance or entitlement. Come in- work- take the pay- shake hands and go home. This is a culture i am struggling to bring about in my factory. Even my highest paid shopfloor manager is on “ghar se phone” or “gaon se phone” almost an hour a day cumulative even while he is working. We are least efficient of the lot. It has become one of the missions of my life to bring in efficiency and discipline to the boys and girls at my work place till they are around. It should become a norm that 8 hours is adequate to achieve deliverables which we presently struggle even with 4 hours of OT everyday! Gen Z is worse in this. I am hoping the one after is better atleast.

No one takes a 3 month vacation. It's usually 4, max 6 weeks It's because the rest of the time they are super productive. Start the day early, 8am on avg No personal calls at the work place No multiple chai/sutta breaks No chit chat about personal lives except during lunch break

Billionaire Michael Milken joked “if a US company replaces the US-born CEO with a CEO born in India, I buy the stock” But he reveals he hasn’t backtested the idea. So we did. In the last 15yrs, that would’ve 50x’d your money: 7.5x more $$ and >2x IRR vs S&P500: 30% vs 14%!

Today met an affluent family that provided their daughter with the most elite education in a prominent boarding school followed by a well-known university where fee for ‘liberal arts’ course is Rs 6 lakh a year Two years ago, the girl left home and told court that she is an adult who wants to live as per free will, and she needs protection from her parents Top lawyers defended her in court She has not contacted the family since then. Parents have exhausted their legal options to make her return or even meet them I will soon do an interview with the couple. Today was an introductory meeting While their daughter’s leaving them was a complete shock and came out of the blue, these are conversations she would routinely have with the parents: - you are Brahmins and privileged scumbags - gender and sexual identity is fluid - ours is a dysfunctional family because you have screamed at me at least four times in these 20 years
