@nickfloats there is no way it can generate a proper 3d mesh with clean topology because this requires a lot of math, so far all the tricks is done in the depth map generation and the result are barely usable

If Quest 3 had proper video input it would be an easy recommendation for 'best PC VR headset' for most people. Why don't they do this, could it really cost that much more? Maybe they subsidize the headset so much they literally don't want to attract more PC VR buyers because they won't make the money back from Quest software sales? Any ideas @ID_AA_Carmack @PalmerLuckey?

@BunniKaitlyn @Meta Meta and Qualcomm are heavily invested in wireless streaming to promote their technology. It's more complicated than just adding a new port, Quest 3 need a separate chip for HDMI/DP to MIPI converter to work as classic PCVR headset.

@TheGoodAI1 @SadlyItsBradley Their method is even more complicated than described in this paper. Meta uses a custom "barcode" line pattern where each line has a different distance from each other. In addition they use stereo structural light which solves the problem with occlusion and shadow projection.

@SadlyItsBradley @Gendsama @ZanderTheBoi The most interesting part is that these lines are not evenly spaced to each other. There is a pattern by which the algorithm recognizes each line individually. In theory, this method is very accurate and can be used as a good 3D scanner.

@speedbuiz To be honest, they most likely didn’t used it in Quest Pro because they don’t have the software ready for it. Their SLAM works well enough to determine depth even without additional laser projectors.

@BallifJed It's not quite off the shelf, but they are using Vixar's VCSEL as the laser source. The whole module is manufactured by Suny with a custom-made diffraction grating with a “barcode” a like line patten. It costs less than $10.
