You and only you can define your worth. Whether in the market place of ideas or achievements. When you allow others to define you you are screwed.

HR: We lost the new hire today. CEO: What happened? HR: He resigned after his first week. CEO: That makes no sense. We doubled his previous salary. HR: Yes, but salary was not the issue. CEO: Then what was? HR: You asked him why he left at exactly 5:00 p.m. And why he left the office before you did. CEO: I was just trying to understand his mindset. HR: He understood it clearly. He felt the company was not paying for his work, but for control over his time. CEO: But commitment matters. HR: So do boundaries. He finished his work, met expectations, and left on time. But instead of that being seen as professionalism, it was treated like a lack of loyalty. CEO: People should not rush out of the office. HR: He was not rushing out. He was simply leaving when the workday ended. CEO: Still, it did not look right. HR: That is exactly why he left. He realized very quickly that even with better pay, the culture expected presenteeism over performance. CEO: That is unfortunate. HR: Yes. We offered him double the salary, but also gave him a preview of a workplace where leaving on time becomes a character issue. CEO: So what are you saying? HR: If employees are judged for having boundaries, then no amount of money will make them stay. A higher salary can attract people. But if respect for time is missing, it will not keep them.

@XavierBecerra There’s literally a chair in SCOTUS specifically reserved for POTUS. It’s been that way forever. One might expect an attorney to know that.

Tonight’s “Buzz’s Bedtime Story” is about how the US Marines helped me meet my wife! On August 8th, 1995, I was a deployed Air Force officer, squadron operations officer, and pilot in Japan. On one particular day, we were flying from Yokota AFB (Tokyo) to South Korea to bring approximately 200 Marines back to their home base, Iwakuni, Japan. We were scheduled to spend the night at Iwakuni and then go back and get the remainder of Marines the next morning. I was giving (“administrating”) a check ride for a pilot upgrading to aircraft commander (Captain). After we arrived to pick up the first group of Marines, we chatted with their commander and realized the remaining Marines would be sleeping on the floor of the terminal that night. My pilot getting the check ride suggested we should come back and get the rest, another 200 Marines. Make it happen, captain. He called AMC headquarters and suggested we keep going. It was pushing a really long crew day but they approved. So, we flew the first 200 home and returned for the rest. The remaining Marines were thrilled. We flew them back to Iwakuni as well, and with no need to spend the night, we turned and flew back to Yokota. We were tired. As always, right after we blocked in, our mission commander picked us up in a pickup truck with ice and beer in the bed. He drove us directly to the Officer’s Club. We were all hanging out at the “Outback” and my loadmaster friend was buying shots. Another pilot, who hadn’t been flying that day, walked across the street from the BOQ, interrupted, and told us (probably about 20 dudes in flight suits) that he had a small party going on in his room. He looked to me and said specifically, “I have somebody I want you to meet.” We all settled up and headed across the street. Immediately upon walking into my buddies apartment, I locked onto a really beautiful girl. That’s who he wanted me to meet. We dated a few times in Tokyo. I flew home and she flew home. Fortunately, we both lived in Northern California and were able to see each other occasionally. That was 30 years ago and 3 glorious children later. ❤️ Semper Fi, boys! Thank you!

Stop talking about “affordability” while voting to deprive their paychecks. This shutdown is punitive, destructive and reckless. I stand with @AFGENational. Pay these workers and end this shutdown.

"For conspicuous gallantry..." On this date in 1863, Secretary of War Edward Stanton presented the first Medal of Honor to US Army Private Jacob Parrott. Since then, the MoH has been awarded only 3,552 times to men and women of all branches of the armed forces and Coast Guard, 1,525 of which were from the Civil War. Their stories are awe inspiring. For more information on the history behind the medal and to read citations from these heroes, visit the Congressional Medal of Honor Society: cmohs.org/recipients

If there’s something I’ve learned during many years as a hospital doctor. When a nurse contacts you and says the words: “He/she just doesn’t look right, I’m worried” You go and see that patient immediately. Not in half an hour. Now.

Two nights ago, I was at a bar just nursing a drink when I saw this man in his 60s. Total presence full head of white hair, very poised. We happened to be drinking the same brand, so I moved over, exchanged some pleasantries, and just asked him straight up:

I’m a pharmacy tech. Chain store. We have a policy. No prescription, no medication. Period. Man came in. Late fifties. Asked for insulin. “I ran out. My prescription’s expired. Doctor’s appointment isn’t until next week.” Checked his records. Type 1 diabetic. Last fill was on time. He wasn’t scamming. “I can’t give it to you without a prescription. Policy.” He nodded. Started to leave. Knew what would happen. Diabetic emergency. Hospital. Maybe worse. Called his doctor’s office. Closed. Left a message marked urgent. Called the pharmacist over. Explained. She looked at the man. Looked at me. “We can do a three-day emergency supply. I’ll authorize it.” Gave him three days of insulin. He tried to pay. She refused. “Get your prescription filled next week. This one’s on us.” He left crying. Thank you over and over. Came back the next week. Prescription filled. Brought us flowers. “You saved my life. I would’ve ended up in the ER. Or dead. For following policy.” That pharmacist got written up. Corporate found out. Medication given without valid prescription. She didn’t care. “Write me up every time,” she told the district manager. “I’ll break policy every time to save a life.” She still works there. Still breaks policy. For people who need insulin. Inhalers. Heart medication. Three-day supplies. Emergencies. Corporate stopped writing her up. Decided it was easier to look away. Because sometimes policy kills. And sometimes breaking rules saves lives. —Andrea, pharmacy tech

March 20, a cursed day for submarines... OTD in 1993: US Navy Sturgeon-class boat USS Grayling (SSN 646) just coincidentally happened to be in the same location in the Barents Sea as Delta IV class submarine RFS Novomoskovsk (K-407) and put a little ding in the Russian SSBN.

OTD in 2009: USS Hartford (SSN 768) pulling into Bahrain after rolling 85° while running up under the keel of USS New Orleans (LPD-18) while at periscope depth in the Strait of Hormuz. Had to transit all the way back to the US on the surface for the $120 million repairs.

For those of you not familiar. The A-10 Warthog is the ugliest, most absurdly beautiful killing machine to ever take flight. A flying chunk of titanium molded around a gatlin gun style cannon; the equally absurd 30mm GAU-8. It commands the adoration of troops on the ground as the sound of its unmistakable mating call the “brrrrrrp” overhead means several enemy fighters have been neutralized. It flies low and slow delivering death more intimately than any other fighter jet could fathom. Cloaked in armor, it’s rumored to be able to take damage to 70% of its airframe and still land with ease. It doesn’t need a long or even paved runway. The uppity nerds running the Air Force have decided to “phase them out” this year… yet here they are continuing to “get some”. I personally think that @USMC should take the them over… they fit perfectly in our “take old shit and make it great” culture.

Chairman of the JCS Gen. Dan Caine: "The A-10 Warthog is now in the fight across the southern flank and is hunting and killing fast attack watercraft in the Straits of Hormuz."
