The official visit of the King of the United Kingdom to the United States has now concluded. And the final day did not pass without an awkward incident.
During His Majesty’s and Queen Camilla’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where they laid a wreath and flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the U.S. honor guard carried the United Kingdom’s flag upside down (the red diagonal stripe in the upper left appeared above the wider white one, even though the Cross of St. Andrew takes precedence over the Cross of St. Patrick).
Historically, an inverted Union Jack was flown on ships as a signal of distress. Today, an upside-down Union Flag is interpreted either as a serious diplomatic mistake or as a deliberate insult to the monarch.

@DanQayyum @BConn39 Charles gave a brilliant speech that was wasted on Trump and his cronies. But the rest of us enjoyed it very much

Here is the thing about "they could have won if they wanted to."
This argument, the stab-in-the-back myth of the American War, is that the U.S. was winning militarily in Vietnam but was undermined by weak political will at home.
That the antiwar movement, the media, the politicians, they're the ones who lost the war.
Not the military.
This is a lie that powerful institutions tell themselves to avoid the real lesson.
The military had everything it asked for.
Escalation after escalation was approved.
Year after year of increased bombing, increased troop deployments, increased resources.
Every time a general said "more," they got more.
543,400 troops at the peak.
2,709,918 Americans deployed to Vietnam in total.
Then more bombs.
Then secret wars in three countries.
That is not "holding back."
That is not "almost trying."
That is an empire exhausting its options and later calling failure restraint.
They got all of it.
And it made no difference.
Because the fundamental problem was not resources.
The problem was that the goal, to establish a compliant South Vietnamese government that would suppress its own population on behalf of American strategic interests, was a goal that could not be achieved by bombing.
You cannot bomb a population into wanting a government it doesn't want.
You cannot napalm a country into political legitimacy.
The war was unwinnable because the premise was illegitimate.
No amount of firepower changes that.
No stab-in-the-back story changes that.
Vietnam showed the world that the premise itself could be defeated.

@rohan_connolly @whome2013 Sick of this 'Australian values' shit
It's code for racial intolerance
Code for exclusiveness
Code for conformity
Code for white supremacy
English

@whome2013 So what are her Australian values? Pushing the agendas of fossil fuel magnates for money? Agreeing with Port Arthur conspiracy theorists if it will help her get NRA money? Yeah, reckon you can stick those values you know where thanks.

@DesertCatsPlay @MykhailoRohoza Did you notice they were red coats?
English

@MykhailoRohoza DID YOU NOTICE THE CONTINENTAL ARMY THAT PRESIDENT TRUMP HAD GREET YOUR KING?
NOW THAT IS TRULY TROLLING.
WE BEAT YOU ONCE BEFORE AND WE DONT NEED ENGLAND…BUT ENGLAND NEEDS US..
English

At a dinner in the White House, Charles III told Donald Trump: “I’ve noticed your changes to the East Wing. I must say, we Brits also, in our own modest way, tried to renovate the White House back in 1814.”
I didn’t know that myself, but looked it up — in 1814, the British burned the White House.
The king also gave Trump a bell from a decommissioned British submarine named “Trump”: “Ring it if you ever need us.”
And this one:
“You recently remarked, Mr. President, that if it weren’t for the United States, European countries would be speaking German. Allow me to say that if it weren’t for us, you would be speaking French.”
But the king didn’t just joke — he also reminded Trump about support for Ukraine and the role of NATO.
Overall, Charles devoted his entire speech to subtly trolling Trump — in a very British way, so refined that it went right over the heads of MAGA supporters. They even applauded him for it!
A British king and an American jester — that says it all.
I love British humor!

@OurShallowState @Jebur27 Boo hoo. The majority of voters are happy with Hegseth. We finally have a real man leading our troops.
English

I'm watching Pete Hegseth testify and anyone who does so with an open mind, will readily see that he is a caricature. He has delusions that he is starring in an action movie.
He is arrogant and ignorant. His narrative never has any depth. He speaks as if what's good and what's right are not even complex subjects, or debates borne of perspective.
He loves American Exceptionalism but believes that it's only defined by musculature and pomposity. He couldn't care less for us being a shining example for others, or a force for a greater good. He couldn't care less for sharing strategy or being accountable.
He creates lasting disdain for America on a global level like few others ever have and make no mistake - this disdain will permeate for generations.
He doesn't present arguments. He doesn't share justifications. He doesn't care for transparency, and the only thing he cares less for than that, is humanity.
As a behaviorist, I can feel the things he's been accused of - like alcoholism and misogyny and reckless sharing of info - underlying his attitude and every utterance, and you can feel how unapologetic he is for any of it.
He is a brazen politician serving an audience of one.
He is a Made for TV concoction, and a vacuous mishmash of hormones and neurotransmitters.
That he's running the US Defense Dept. is incredibly dangerous and disturbing.
