Dr. Craig Spencer is a public health professor and emergency medicine physician at Brown University who survived Ebola in 2014. He says it's not a coincidence that the world is seeing a new outbreak of the disease, as well as hantavirus and rising rates of measles in the United States. "If you recall, it was just over a year ago that Elon Musk gleefully declared that they were throwing USAID into the wood chipper. And you may recall that Elon Musk also sheepishly said at his first Cabinet meeting that he mistakenly canceled Ebola prevention but turned it back on. For many folks, the story ended there, but what actually happened was there was an Ebola outbreak, and DOGE and Elon Musk cut all the support that we normally would have been giving to respond to that Ebola outbreak. The result was that exactly USAID, who in the past would have been supporting things like airport screening in Uganda, was not providing that logistical or financial support. USAID and other partners would have been providing support to make sure testing was adequate, to make sure a vaccine rollout could have taken place, but we didn’t have USAID on the ground. "Similarly, CDC has long had relationships in this part of the continent, in Congo and in Uganda, and a lot of those relationships have broken down and withered over the past year, because we just haven’t been paying. Similarly, the U.S. has pulled out of the World Health Organization over the last year, which means that in normal circumstances our CDC folks are not able to even talk to World Health Organization people, something that is absolutely unbelievable and an incredible mistake for something that we should be able to do and be prepared for at all points. "And the result is what we’ve seen over the past couple of weeks with hantavirus, we’ve seen with the dramatic increase in number of measles cases in the U.S., and now Ebola in DR Congo and across the border in Kampala. This is not all just a coincidence. This is a consequence of us cutting back our support, not only here at home, but also abroad. democracynow.org/2026/5/18/ebol…

@ChuckMuth You are boot licking to the point of being ok with with the government just doing targeted killings of random boats, claiming they are running drugs without evidence or any legal process? PS -I don't pay Elon so I don't get to edit my tweets.

@vinnyspot You’re saying those drug runners were “Caribbean fisherman”? What a doofus. That you’re a publik skool teacher helps explain why we’re last in the education. What WON’T you TDS sufferers fall for? (PS: it’s “randomly.” A teacher should know that.)

@ChuckMuth And are you saying it's ok to random kill Caribbean fisherman? Are you supporting the blockade and war with Cuba that Trump is about to start?

@ChuckMuth I'm out of my depth? You literally don't actually give one reason or answer at all... I could tell you about CA refinery standards that help alleviate toxic air, or the way oil pipelines mean that the west coast is more dependent on oil from the middle east than other regions...

Gas is still above $4.50. Housing and child care prices are just getting worse. And Trump & Republicans’ top priorities this week are a golden ballroom and a slush fund for Jan. 6 rioters.

💢 DAY 215 of the Gaza “Ceasefire” In the seven months since Israel’s cabinet and Prime Minister approved the Trump-brokered ceasefire agreement, Israeli forces have violated its terms nearly 3,000 times, according to field monitoring by the Palestinian side shared with mediators. Thursday alone saw 5 new violations, including strikes that killed 4 Palestinians and wounded 7 others. Incidents recorded on Thursday: 🔹 Radi Fawzi Halawa, 25, killed by an Israeli quadcopter drone strike on Old Gaza Street in Jabalia 🔹 Three children — aged 9, 15, and 16 — critically wounded in an Israeli drone strike east of Khan Younis 🔹 A young man shot and killed by Israeli forces near the UNRWA clinic in Jabalia Camp, with an Israeli drone preventing residents from retrieving his body 🔹 Iyad Shaaban Youssef Nabhan, 32, wounded by Israeli live fire in the Al-Salatin neighborhood west of Jabalia 🔹 Tamer Iyad Al-Matouq and Mohammad Nayef Al-Matouq killed and others wounded in an Israeli drone strike targeting a group of civilians on Al-Nuzha Street in Jabalia Totals Since the ceasefire took effect, 861 Palestinians have been killed — including 217 children, 91 women, and 23 elderly — and 2,493 wounded, of whom exactly half are children, women, or elderly. 79 civilians have also been detained. Israeli forces have now carried out 1,270 airstrikes and shelling attacks and 1,108 live-fire incidents across Gaza in that time. Ongoing Violations Israel also continues to hold approximately 34 square kilometers beyond agreed withdrawal lines and has blocked repairs to electricity, water, and sewage infrastructure. Aid and movement restrictions also remain severe: Aid entry ▪️ Only ~37.2% of agreed humanitarian aid has entered — ~223 trucks per day vs. 600 agreed ▪️ Fuel deliveries at just 15% of required levels Rafah crossing ▪️ Only 5,304 of 15,600 planned crossings carried out (~34%) ▪️ 88 individuals turned back at the crossing on the reported day ▪️ Medical and humanitarian travel remains severely restricted
