1/ A few people have asked me about how the new edition of Tolkien's letters will do numbering. I don't have any inside information but, obviously I care a lot about this issue and have some experience so here are some thoughts.

2/ Firstly I'll say this isn't a new problem and I've even given academic talks on it. From Köchel numbers to Strongs numbers to highway exit numbers, if you try to enumerate a list and then need to add new items, you're faced with a challenge with generally three solutions.
