Finally on X. Years in the army taught me discipline, patience, and that duty never ends. Looking forward to sharing small stories, reflections, and thoughts from life on and off the field. 🇮🇳

@vrkiyyer @anandmahindra I had called Hello Nariyal a week back and Rahul from Raipit had come and climbed 19 trees and plucked the coconuts. He even climbed one a second time to pluck some tender ones (on request)!!! No issues with anyone else. Great service.

The reality is different in Kerala. You can do this once, perhaps twice, and third time, “the mooper” (the traditional tree climber of Kerala backed by union, who claim his rights on coconuts/trees of particular assigned areas) of the location will pick this guy by collar and kick him out. There’s an unwritten policy in Kerala: when you own a property with an house or bunglow, coconut trees cannot be cut down (by a stranger), and the fruits can only be harvested by “mopper” or his men. Else prepared for an argument & fight. So pls don’t fall for those purely promotional videos on Instagram and YouTube. They’re mostly engagement farming and don’t reflect the actual reality in Kerala.

In Kerala, apparently you can now call a coconut harvester the same way you book a cab. A uniformed professional arrives on a cycle, equipped, trained, and ready to work. We often speak about India’s services economy in terms of IT exports or global capability centres. But we’re digitising even our most traditional, hyper-local services. There was another detail from this video that stayed with me. The young man who climbed those trees was from Chhattisgarh. When I began my career in our Group’s steel business, many of of our associates working in our furnace and foundry shops had come from states like Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, travelling far from home in search of opportunity. Today, it seems those same aspirations are finding avenues not just in heavy industry, as in the past, but in new-age, tech-enabled services. People moving, adapting and rising are a powerful economic force. And also a force for integration. As long as they’re welcomed by the host states!

Yes. It is how one writes it. 1st Battalion, Brigade of the Guards or 1 GUARDS. Anyway, it is just leg pulling within the Regiment. @YashMor5 knows that. First to be converted was 3 GUARDS (1 RAJ RIF) on 1 Sep 1949. Followed by 4 GUARDS (1 RAJPUT) 26 Jan 1950. 1 GUARDS (2 PUNJAB) 1 Apr 1951 & finally 2 GUARDS (1 GRENADIERS) on 1 Aug 1952.

01 Apr 1991, deployed in the field area, somewhere on western front, as was the norm those days. Today is the Raising Day of the oldest Infantry Battalion of the Indian Army. 1 Guards (2 Punjab), proud to have been commissioned in the FINEST FIRST and later commanded. In the centre is our CO, Col SS Pathania, SM, I have not seen a braver officer than him. Jai Hind 🇮🇳

@SpencerGuard @ShivAroor I have no doubt about the hit, but I seek one clarification. Most of the videos of the strike are in daylight… does it mean that the timeline for these strikes was different from the main strike at midnight / early early morning?

Evidence of India's precision strikes on/near Kirana Hills, reported to be one of the core Pakistan nuclear program sites, was a direct strategic message to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor that India could hit what it wanted, when it wanted. Escalation ladder dominance. Deterrence (will and capability). Great conversation between Tim Cooper @ShivAroor @ndtv

Anyone around 60 or older will have some memories of the 1971 War which began this day 54 years ago. Can we create a memory thread.... ? I remember air raid sirens in Jammu, returning from school and later spending the night of 3rd Dec in a cold bunker, wide awake with my mom. The sky lit up, sounds of bombs and shelling close by caused our home to shake and glass panes to shatter... If you were around then, what do you remember ?

Thirteen years ago, the date of my first non stop solo circumnavigation became a matter of national importance, at least between Admiral Awati and me. The departure date was critical. I had to plan it so that my Southern Ocean legs fell in summer, rounding Cape Horn in January or February. Working backwards, 1 November looked perfect. Everything was planned to the hour. Then Admiral Awati decided I was leaving too late. “You’ll miss the summer window,” he warned, insisting that I set sail on Dussehra. An auspicious day, yes, but eight days earlier and eight days less prepared. We had reached a stalemate, sailor versus admiral, both equally stubborn. Then it struck me. 1 November was Kerala Foundation Day, also the foundation day of a few other states. I mentioned it to the Admiral. He thought for a moment, smiled, and said, “That’ll do. Cast off on 1 November.” And that is how my first circumnavigation began, not by divine revelation but by clever negotiation. Today, thirteen years later, the date came back with another surprise. I was informed that I have been awarded one of Kerala’s highest civilian honours, the Kerala Sree Award, on this very day, 1 November. Thrilled, grateful, and quite an honour. A truly pleasant surprise.
