Dear friends i wish you Christians Jews Moslems Zoroastrians Hindus atheists all happy Hannukah & Xmas tmrrow hoping this rare convergence of festivals of love light freedom liberation redemption may be an auspicious conjunction that heralds peace tolerance health happiness and relief of suffering esp in the Middle East & Ukraine. The story of Hannukah and the Maccabees is a special one of triumph of light over dark, of the historical defeat of a repressive empire, of divine blessing, personal freedom & political rebirth that is v appropriate today in all manner of ways and all sides in the conflicts. This is my favourite ancient menorah of the 1stC Migdal Synagogue & a medieval image fr a 14thC Spanish Bible. Here too is the menorah on Titus’s Arch an image of the great golden candelbra that stood in Jerusalem’s Jewish Temple, that in the mayhem of its storming and fall was seized in the destruction of 70, a trophy paraded in Titus’s Triumph, displayed in Rome’s Temple of Peace or Imperial Palace for centuries, looted & taken to Africa by the Vandals 455, recovered by Belisarius 533 and taken to Constantinople and later lost to history….
