@Tom_LSOO I agree with you that this is very concerning and disturbing, and you are probably right that I should not have apologized. Might delete the tweet. Although I don't think the people attacking me are my base.

Πήγαν Έλληνες σε τουρκικό χωριό να βρουν τις ρίζες τους και συνυπέγραψαν μαζί με Τούρκους: «Νιώσαμε μεγάλη χαρά που μας δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να γνωριστούμε καλύτερα και να αναβιώσουμε τους δεσμούς γειτονίας που είχαν κάποτε οι παππούδες και οι γιαγιάδες μας στα ίδια χωριά. Ευχόμαστε στο μέλλον να συνεχίσουμε να συνεργαζόμαστε, συμβάλλοντας και από τις δύο πλευρές στη διατήρηση της ειρηνικής συλλογικής μνήμης που μας κληροδότησαν οι πρόγονοί μας.» Οι «γείτονες» όμως των παππούδων και γιαγιάδων ήταν ο καδής, ο βοεβόδας και ο μουντεσελίμης. Στα «δικαστήρια» του καδή η μαρτυρία χριστιανού είχε μικρότερη βαρύτητα. Οι ραγιάδες είτε έχαναν είτε «έχωναν χοντρό μπαξίσι» — ντενεκέδια λάδι, λίρες, κατσίκες, πρόβατα. Οι φτωχότεροι έδιναν αβγά ή κότες για να μειωθεί η ποινή. Ο βοεβόδας ήταν η προσωποποίηση της καταπίεσης και του τρόμου. Φοροεισπράκτορας και τοπάρχης με στρατό πραιτοριανών δίπλα του. Όπου περνούσε, τα κεφάλια των ραγιάδων έφταναν στο χώμα. (Σαν τον Σεΐζη στο «Ο Χριστός ξανασταυρώνεται»). Ο μουντεσελίμης ήταν όλα σε ένα: διοίκηση, ασφάλεια, φόροι. Υπήρχε για να επιτηρεί την ανισότητα. Μικτοί γάμοι; Κοινωνικά κατακριτέοι. Ρωμιά με Τούρκο = μεγάλη αμαρτία και κατάρα (μόνο αν αλλαξοπιστούσε). Το αντίθετο θεωρούνταν ύψιστη ντροπή και απαγορευόταν. Ιδιοκτησία γης; Δεν υπήρχε με τη σημερινή έννοια. Η γη ανήκε στον Σουλτάνο. Για να αγοράσει χριστιανός χρειαζόταν έγκριση + μπαξίσια από βοεβόδα και μουντεσελίμη. Νταβατζήδες των ραγιάδων. Με το κίνημα των Νεοτούρκων χιλιάδες σφαγιάστηκαν από τους «γείτονες». Και όμως υπήρξαν Έλληνες που συνυπέγραψαν ότι οι πρόγονοι κληροδότησαν «ειρηνική συλλογική μνήμη» και ότι πρέπει να συνεργαστούμε για να τη διατηρήσουμε. Πολλά από αυτά τα κουσούρια δυστυχώς μας έμειναν. Είναι αυτός ο τρόπος να τιμήσουμε τη μνήμη των προγόνων και την ιστορία;

I have one question for the Christopher Nolan haters/for all the folks on this here app who questioned Nolan: what’s it like being on the wrong side of history? I’m truly, genuinely asking. What’s it like having to go to sleep at night knowing you were so fucking wrong? Face the music. Look in the mirror. Christopher Nolan just brushed you off his shoulder.

In order to see this moment clearly, and to wisely participate in the Good, we need to understand is it DOES NOT MATTER what story Nolan thought he was telling; it only matters what story he actually told. Art is a thing greater than the artist through which it comes. Until we grasp this, we will never recover from all our individualistic narcissism. I see a great deal of old school Puritanism in response to @PageauJonathan, that graceless purity cult which cannot receive any truth unless it flows from some kind of pristinely unsoiled source - which is a thing that doesn't actually exist in this world, which is why conservatives never have any good art.

The Odyssey is going to make a bunch of money, win a bunch of awards and millions of people will love it. Hating it sight unseen because you want to be part of an edgy antiwoke movement spamming buzzwords and slurs in comment threads is just a miserable way to live.

First thoughts on The Odyssey. There is a scene at the very beginning of the film in which, in the absence of his father, Telemachus is being trained by the blind Eumaeus, Odysseus’s loyal servant. Eumaeus warns that the reason Telemachus is constantly being bested by his sparring partner is that his defense is too quick. He must move more slowly, open his chest, invite the attack, and use his opponent’s momentum against him. In the spirit of Odysseus, deep trickery is at work in this film. Don’t let the apparent compromises fool you. The Odyssey is an absolute triumph. It is made with a profound love for the source material, filled with deep pathos: the return of the father, the elevation of the son, and the restoration of proper order despite all the sins perpetrated by the guardians of that order. It is a film about the end of one world and the beginning of another; about remembrance, return, and the perpetuation of an order after a long wandering through chaos. It’s The Odyssey.

Don’t listen to manufactured online outrage. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is immense filmmaking. We’ve never had a movie like this in my lifetime and I fear we never will again.

The Greek Cypriots left themselves out in the cold when they shot down the Annan Plan and the Cyprus issue became unresolvable after it was shelved during their EU accession process. Now they are trying to present the Cyprus issue as an EU problem. If it was an EU problem it would and should have been addressed in 2004/2005. The EU accepted Cyprus as a divided island and until Greek Cypriots get off their maximalist high horse and reach a deal with their Turkish Cypriot neighbors, a divided island it will remain.
Straturka@straturka

Greek Cypriot writer @TheanoKalavana offered striking insights in her article titled “The Truth Is, Cyprus Is Left Out in the Cold.” “Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is now the leader of a country that holds talks simultaneously with Moscow, Washington, Brussels, Kyiv, and Arab capitals,” the Greek Cypriot writer said, adding, “Turkey is no longer just an ally of the West. It has become an autonomous regional power that negotiates from a position of strength with everyone.”
