I hired a photographer for $4,500. Told my aunt: “Do not touch the camera. Do not pose people without her.”
She’s a “hobby photographer.” Said: “Relax, I just want a few shots for myself.”
Mid-ceremony she walked in front of the pro, blocked the aisle, and knocked over her tripod.
Lens shattered. Memory cards corrupted. 3 hours of photos gone.
Photographer’s insurance covered gear, but not lost images.
Reshoot cost + refunds to guests: $6,200.
Aunt’s response? “It was just one step. You’re being dramatic.” Then she refused to pay.
Said I should have “hired a better photographer if she was so clumsy.”
My dad called me after: “She’s family. Don’t sue your own aunt over pictures.”
But it wasn’t just pictures.
I gave her one rule. She broke it in front of 150 people.
So I sent an invoice. She ignored it. I filed in small claims.
Won the full $6,200 + court fees.
Garnishment hits her pension check every month.
She canceled her cruise because she can’t afford it now.
And somehow…
I’m the one cousins say “cares more about money than family.”
Apparently, in my family, “do not touch” means “take the best shot.”
But expecting her to pay for destroying irreplaceable memories?
That makes me the villain.
