Important to not keep reducing every point to just one. Very important. So no matter how much the Rafale deal angers you, try and see the point I am making. The point is, restoration of IAF to 42 Sqns isn't enough. Expansion is needed. And arguments saying 'now 42 not needed due to drones/missiles blah.. Blah... ' are somehow not applied to naval and land forces. Despite clear limitations to their employability. Now, how is that expansion yo be achieved? Well... 40+ 180 + 120 (at least) + 40 (likely to be increased) + more (to be decided later) of Mk1, Mk1A, Mk2, AMCA, AMCA+. That's like 460-500 of indigenous fighters. All in various stages of development. National defence cannot be premised entirely on developmental programs in the realm of aerospace. At least not till your industry builds up. So we will get there at the end. But aren't there yet. 114+36 (+26+more of IN) give us the proven capability platform and hedge risks. Also will allow capability build up of the private partner. Manufacturing standards, techniques, program management, skills, supply chains and what have you. Neither is it like a lumpsum payment. $ 40 bn, one go. Poof. No. Will be spread out over 7-8 years, with some ploughing back into Indian defence ecosystem. Now, even if you do not believe me, and have differences, I'd request you to have an open mind, and let's consider the larger issue highlighted. I take it that you agree with the need to expand the IAF but want it to be all indigenous. And that's a good start.

Mention of restoration of the IAF to the sanctioned level invariably draws this response. But the PLAAF and PAF somehow haven't heard of it yet. Or at least they aren't heeding it. PAF has grown from 16-17 fighter sqns to 21-22 today. The PLAAF has grown to be the largest AF in the world in manpower terms, and has become a very potent aerospace force with possibly 1200 5G fighters by 2030. They didn't get the memo it seems. Now all this expansion is OVER AND ABOVE Capacity enhancement in the missile/drone/rocket segment. They, as with Ukraine and Russia and the Western countries clearly do not pay heed to this advice than one sees many OG and white uniform veterans pushing very forcefully. Somehow this argument is never made for armoured forces, or for naval forces. Despite limited effectiveness in the roles envisaged for them (of course I am not stating full context here), no calls for reviewing the Naval expansion plans, or re assessing the actual cost benefit analysis of a (say) mountain strike Corps. The IAF, despite actively creating swarm drone capability in India through the Mehar Baba initiative, and committing to 4 of its principal warfighting units (squadrons) inducting UCAVs, is forever preached to. Corresponding uncrewed large surface and underwater combatant programs are by comparison at an early stage. Uncrewed tank programs are at Idex stage. Respected and knowledgeable veterans must desist from this argument at least. There are others which can be discussed. But this one, is inexplicable. Or, let's apply the same to sea and land as well.

If anything, what India really needs to procure from Korea is the uncompromised dedication towards self-reliance.
