Canton runs on Daml, a smart contract language purpose-built for multi-party financial workflows. Why build a new language instead of using Solidity or another existing option? Standard smart contract languages were not designed for workflows where multiple independent parties need to authorize, verify, and settle in a single atomic operation. Daml was designed for exactly this. It models rights and obligations between parties as first-class primitives. Authorization is built into the language, not bolted on. Privacy is enforced at the contract level, meaning each party only sees the data relevant to them. The result: developers can write multi-party financial logic that is correct by construction, not just by testing.
