On International #WellnessDay, I reiterate that health is not merely the absence of disease; it is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. It is not created primarily in hospitals and clinics, but in homes, streets, schools and communities, influenced by the air we breathe, the food we eat, the products we consume, and the conditions in which we live and work. @WHO is working with partners across the @UN and beyond to promote well-being, social justice, inclusive economies, and new ways to measure progress that reflect what truly matters in people’s lives.

30 years ago I was the starting QB at Utah State University. My senior year I got benched. For the next 15 years I walked around feeling like a certified loser. Then I read this quote from Pat Summitt: 'Winning is fun… Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you’ve done is the point.' It snapped me out of it. If you’re still carrying a sports setback, a benching, a missed opportunity, or any “I’m not enough” story… this is your permission slip to drop it. The game isn’t over. Your story is not yet written. You are still a work in progress. The point is you keep wanting it. You keep getting up. And you listen to that quiet voice that says, "I will try again tomorrow."

I got a call tonight from a constituent whose son is in federal prison He explained that he hasn’t heard from his son in several days (which is unusual for him), that his son suffers from multiple, potentially life-threatening health conditions that are going untreated in prison, and that he needed to know whether his son was still alive He sent me the main switchboard number for the prison in question (which is on the east coast), and I called the number Someone answered almost immediately I explained who I was and why I was calling, and in particular that I needed to know whether this particular inmate was alive and well The guy scolded me three times for calling “too f***ing late” and refused to tell me anything Only when I persisted did he agree to check his records to confirm that the inmate in question was alive and well After checking a list briefly, he came back to the phone and said “he’s here, and he’s alive and receiving the treatment he needs” (His parents assure me that that’s simply not true) I asked politely if someone could leave the inmate a message asking him to call his parents in the morning He said, “it’s too late” I responded, “I don’t mean now, I mean in the morning” He scolded me again for calling too late, and then told me I’d have to call tomorrow and track down the inmate’s counselor I asked him if he could relay the note to the counselor for me He scolded me again for calling too late and asked me to call back tomorrow to track down the inmate’s counselor I asked for the guy’s name He refused to answer I asked for his name again He hung up on me That’s not okay Sadly, this is not the first time I’ve had this experience when talking to people from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons on behalf of constituents with an incarcerated family member suffering from a severe medical condition And each occasion, I’ve been treated at best with dismissiveness and at worst with contempt and profanity Has anyone else experienced this with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons?

Did you guys know there's a great book about hate crime hoaxes called "Crying Wolf" by Laird Wilcox. He gives a breakdown of common qualities hoaxes have. Feels like today, April 14th, may be a good day to learn them. Tell me if you guys think these apply to anything? Hoaxes: 1. Can’t be corroborated w/ reasonable evidence or disinterested witnesses, or is accompanied by an account which contains inconsistencies. When confronted with a lack of evidence the victim may become angry & cease cooperating with authorities. 2. Occurs just when it’s "needed" to promote awareness or sensitivity to racism or anti-Semitism, to disarm critics and make them reluctant to "talk back." 3. Repeat incidents, especially with "difficult," resentful & easily offended individuals who frequently complain of disrespect, slights, insults or harassment. 4. Particularly skillfully exploited by the alleged victim to attain victim status, manipulate institutions, obtain concessions, special privileges, or money. 5. Occur in improbable circumstances. The highly improbable case, where an actual hate crime would have been very difficult to pull off, is usually a hoax. 6. In the case of graffiti, carefully drawn symbols or slurs suggest that the author really wants to get a point across -- precisely what is meant and the repulsive character of the persons behind it and this suggests a hoax. Generally speaking, the more elaborate the circumstances, the greater likelihood of a hoax. 7. Authorities suspect a hoax when local antiracist and radical special interest groups defame and vilify doubters. In fact, they may suspect it themselves. Often the perpetrator will confide in others or even brag about the hoax. 8. Finally, several hoaxers have reported marking or symbols painted on their bodies by their alleged assailants. This rarely occurs in bona fide cases. For reasons that are not clear, body markings on the victim by the alleged perpetrators are apparently a cause for suspicion. One theory is that the markings are intended to represent wounds. Another is that hoaxers are often self-absorbed individuals and the markings are narcissistic attention-getting devices.
