Today, we urged the DC Council to protect child care, paid family & medical leave, and the HealthySteps (which pediatricians rely on to care for their kids)! We even delivered candy microphones to every Council office with one message: speak up for DC families, educators, and workers in these hearings. 🎤🍬

Thank you @tweetelissa for joining @Under3DC at The Hill Preschool during Teacher Appreciation Week! We spent time with early educators and heard firsthand about the challenges and rewards of working in early childhood education. DC’s teachers and caregivers deserve support, respect, and investment. 💛 #TeacherAppreciationWeek

Grateful to coalition partners like @DCEducare, who met with several @councilofdc offices yesterday to urge them to fully fund: Child Care Subsidy: $177.1M to keep care affordable for families and prevent waitlists. Pay Equity Fund: $94.2M to restore fair pay for early educators. The Mayor proposed a cruel budget. Now it is on the Council to fix it.

“I was getting paid more to make sandwiches than to educate kids.” D.C.’s investment in the Pay Equity Fund changed that for Educare DC Assistant Teacher Shremaine Stewart. Now, the future she’s building could be pulled out from under her. wapo.st/4sSLkD9

This new research from @MathematicaNow affirms what we already know at Educare DC: the #PayEquityFund is working. It is growing the teacher workforce. It is helping educators stay in the field. And it is expanding access for families.
DC Action@WeAreDCAction

Today we’re hearing from researchers, analysts, parents, and child care center leaders about how impactful the Pay Equity Fund is for children, families, educators, and the economy. According to @MathematicaNow, the PEF has generated $93M in total benefits compared to $76M in costs, w/ a positive ROI: -78% of total program benefits accrued to families -13% of total program benefits to child care facilities -9% of total program benefits to educators

MY VIEW: Audrey Kasselman of @WeAreDCAction makes the case 4 the Early Childcare Educator Equity Pay Fund. She said that without it, centers will likely cease operation, which decimates options for working parents who drive the local economy. @WashInformer story coming soon...

Bowser's argument has been: DC already has robust early childhood programs, such as free pre-K, and the city can't afford more @BrianneKNadeau just derided those remarks as "self congratulatory." "Wow, so you're proud you preserved Vince Gray's program from 10 years ago, huh?"

.@Under3DC and @WeAreDCAction are rolling out a new report at the Wilson Building arguing the childcare pay equity fund delivers way more in benefits than it costs: Bowser plans to eliminate it. It also argues most benefits flow to parents (despite Bowser's assertions otherwise)

This research shows that the Pay Equity Fund continues to benefit families by ensuring quality care, it benefits facilities by attracting educators to the field, and it benefits DC with a major return on investment. What other program can claim such effectiveness?

To eliminate the Pay Equity Fund and further squeeze an already tightened knot on the DC’s Child Care Subsidy Program is cruel to District families doing their best to raise their kids in the city and make ends meet. Our latest poll shows #WashingtonDC voters disagree with Mayor Bowser and strongly support fully funding both. See more results here: bit.ly/47USWh6
