DC's growth depends on its investments in child care. But those investments and DC's growth are now threatened in the FY27 budget. We are so proud of our Parent Ambassador Lauren Hooper who spoke at the rally and is featured in this @nbcwashington story: nbcwashington.com/video/news/loc…

#HealthCare4Childcare originated from the Pay Equity Fund and has allowed thousands of families to receive healthcare insurance for the first time. We must continue to fight to hold onto the Pay Equity Fund and the District must continue being a national leader on this issue.

The providers, parents and advocates are also pushing for Bowser not to defund the $70 million Pay Equity Fund in her next budget. This is the fund that’s used to increase child care worker pay so it comes closer to matching what teachers make.

Solid turnout at the Wilson Building of child care providers, advocates, and parents protesting @MayorBowser’s decision to impose a wait list on D.C.’s child care subsidy program in order to contain costs. It goes into effect on May 12.

NEWS: D.C. says that starting on May 12 it will implement a wait list for the child care subsidy program, which currently helps 7,500 kids from low-income families pay for child care. City officials say without it, enrollment growth will blow the program's $96 million budget.

Big rally of childcare advocates, including teachers and parents, at the Wilson Building today. They’re protesting the childcare subsidy wait list and other cuts expected for ECE programs. And very notable signs supporting the business activity tax to fund childcare…

Here is what we think of @OSSEDC’s decision to implement a #childcare subsidy waitlist in May: “…when all but the wealthiest of DC families are tightening their budgets to withstand our current economic uncertainty, shutting the door midyear to families not already enrolled removes a building block of early childhood education from those who needs it the most…” under3dc.org/newsroom/coali…

New: DC is implementing a waitlist for its childcare subsidy program to cut costs, a step Bowser warned could be coming last month. New policy starts May 12. Childcare providers fear it’ll function as a freeze, as it’s unclear if new students can join as others drop out.

Early childhood educators deserve fair pay for their essential work. It keeps classrooms open, children learning, parents working, and our economy running. @MayorBowser, cutting the #PayEquityFund would be a mistake. Read Jamal's op-ed below to learn why:
Greater Greater Washington@ggwash

DC has made a deliberate choice in the last decade to treat child care not as a social service, but as essential infrastructure. Just like any critical infrastructure, early childhood systems require committed and sustained investment: ggwash.org/view/102614/ch…

@OSSEDC @ChmnMendelson A cut to the Pay Equity Fund not only harms educators but also disrupts the relationship, consistency, and trust that children need from their teachers to flourish at the early stages of their education. Parent, LaWanda White, worries that cuts will affect educator retention and harm her son’s learning progress.
