@DrFrancesRyan @johnharris1969 The issue goes even deeper than this & it is global issue. -Stuck at home can mean more health issues due to lack of exercise (for careers & the person) - Education also what purpose does it serve for the careers and person The @wecanacceess team has personal experience of this

“If you are not disabled and you regularly go to a yoga class, a book group or just the pub, when was the last time you did so with even a single disabled adult present?” Thanks to @johnharris1969 for being one of the rare columnists to ask these Qs. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

💡why don’t unpaid carers ever bring a claim against government for loss of earnings, pension, health, career etc? Expectation is that you care 24 hrs a day because the system is so broken, which leaves you having to justify even the simple need for sleep or to see the GP

Schools are facing a crisis of leadership. Too many administrators lack the preparation and skills needed to navigate the needs of today’s schools. The system sets them up for failure—expecting them to lead without adequate training, resources, or mentorship. How can we expect success when we don’t invest in their growth?

@contactfamilies and this has a wider impact, i,e ability to work, impact pm poss pensions, kids life skills and health of parents and wider family and more ... by not enabling a child to access good quality education (in whatever form) costs are higher in the long term

Parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have told the BBC they are still unable to attend school full time, four months after cuts to transport provision at a council came into force. Birmingham City Council has withdrawn free home-to-school transport for most pupils over 16 who have SEND. Read more here: s.mtrbio.com/xoorbbxlfu

When a child has experienced trauma, their behaviour isn’t a moral failing, it’s communication. The anger you see? That’s pain. The defiance? That’s fear. And the silence? That’s a survival strategy. None of this is about excusing bad behaviour. It’s about understanding it!

@wecanaccess Sorry I had meant to write incidents. Targets and goals were written lies in my son’s end of year report, honestly it was as if I was reading about a child who had no difficulties. In his new school, his targets are achieved, he’s made great progress, they understand his needs.

“The school claimed it was having difficulty moving him to the dining room it asked the trust to add a wheeled base to the chair. His mother said this was unnecessary restraint, as he was able to walk but just needed time and encouragement to do so.” belfastlive.co.uk/news/northern-…

@wecanaccess Compassion fatigue is a real issue. I do think that’s what leads to many of the #SEN issue we hear about. I was told by the VP there was no cameras to prove what I saw, despite 2 witnesses. This is a culture led from the top down.

@shakespeare_d A big issue is recruiting staff with the correct attitude that will maximise the potential of the child & enable them. Systems generally do not look at the big picture and support the child in having a successful long future ..i,e working on short term goals (a few years if that)

@wecanaccess I agree that is what played out, a big rush to do everything which doesn’t work for our children who need processing time. Tbh there wasn’t this rushed approach in my other 2 children’s MS primary school. Even when they got 1:1 hrs for him they dragged him down the corridor.
