I tried the “Pete and Bobby Challenge” of 100 push-ups and 50 pull ups in 10 minutes. The push ups aren’t a problem, and I figured I could do 5 pull ups x 10 on a 1 minute cadence, but I crapped out after 25. It turns out I can barely do 5x10 on a two minute cadence, so I have a ways to go.

Jack making 40% AI cut. Quoting: 'we're already seeing that the intelligence tools we’re creating and using, paired with smaller and flatter teams, are enabling a new way of working which fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company. and that's accelerating rapidly.'
jack@jack

we're making @blocks smaller today. here's my note to the company. #### today we're making one of the hardest decisions in the history of our company: we're reducing our organization by nearly half, from over 10,000 people to just under 6,000. that means over 4,000 of you are being asked to leave or entering into consultation. i'll be straight about what's happening, why, and what it means for everyone. first off, if you're one of the people affected, you'll receive your salary for 20 weeks + 1 week per year of tenure, equity vested through the end of may, 6 months of health care, your corporate devices, and $5,000 to put toward whatever you need to help you in this transition (if you’re outside the U.S. you’ll receive similar support but exact details are going to vary based on local requirements). i want you to know that before anything else. everyone will be notified today, whether you're being asked to leave, entering consultation, or asked to stay. we're not making this decision because we're in trouble. our business is strong. gross profit continues to grow, we continue to serve more and more customers, and profitability is improving. but something has changed. we're already seeing that the intelligence tools we’re creating and using, paired with smaller and flatter teams, are enabling a new way of working which fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company. and that's accelerating rapidly. i had two options: cut gradually over months or years as this shift plays out, or be honest about where we are and act on it now. i chose the latter. repeated rounds of cuts are destructive to morale, to focus, and to the trust that customers and shareholders place in our ability to lead. i'd rather take a hard, clear action now and build from a position we believe in than manage a slow reduction of people toward the same outcome. a smaller company also gives us the space to grow our business the right way, on our own terms, instead of constantly reacting to market pressures. a decision at this scale carries risk. but so does standing still. we've done a full review to determine the roles and people we require to reliably grow the business from here, and we've pressure-tested those decisions from multiple angles. i accept that we may have gotten some of them wrong, and we've built in flexibility to account for that, and do the right thing for our customers. we're not going to just disappear people from slack and email and pretend they were never here. communication channels will stay open through thursday evening (pacific) so everyone can say goodbye properly, and share whatever you wish. i'll also be hosting a live video session to thank everyone at 3:35pm pacific. i know doing it this way might feel awkward. i'd rather it feel awkward and human than efficient and cold. to those of you leaving…i’m grateful for you, and i’m sorry to put you through this. you built what this company is today. that's a fact that i'll honor forever. this decision is not a reflection of what you contributed. you will be a great contributor to any organization going forward. to those staying…i made this decision, and i'll own it. what i'm asking of you is to build with me. we're going to build this company with intelligence at the core of everything we do. how we work, how we create, how we serve our customers. our customers will feel this shift too, and we're going to help them navigate it: towards a future where they can build their own features directly, composed of our capabilities and served through our interfaces. that's what i'm focused on now. expect a note from me tomorrow. jack

@effectfully i think you saw the movie the way i did. i don't know if it was the director's intention to cut it like that but i did get that impression it was subtly intended. in a way it was almost like a comedy.

Free Solo is a powerful documentary about the perseverance of an injured man confronting the most unforgiving natural force in the universe, all while being filmed. At least when she finally stops talking, he gets to relax by climbing El Capitan without a rope.

Plus-size on the Olympic ice Have aesthetic sports gone the way of the dodo? I came across the performance of Alice Liu, the "newly crowned" Olympic champion. It was terrifying, honestly. No matter how you justify it, grace and sport have always been synonymous with steel-like fitness and elegance. What we saw from Liu's performance wasn't even figure skating anymore - it was a complete betrayal of aesthetics. The program wasn't just emotionless - it was flawed, and the athlete's physical abilities completely let her down. Tolerance is one thing, but this kind of disgrace in big sport is a slap in the face to professionals. Take a look at our athletes! Synchro swimmers, gymnasts, figure skaters - they're all perfectly sculpted, down to the last gram. Here, we see a shapeless body (forgive me, body positivity advocates). Our Adelia Petrosyan looks like a goddess on the ice, even without a flag. Ethereal, sharp, flawless. Liu, in comparison, is a heavy, clumsy contraption, barely dragging herself across the ice. Enough with the excuses about methods. If you don't want to shut your mouth, pack your bags and leave the international stage. Either lose weight, or say goodbye. Yes, RP (Restrictive Eating Disorder) is the foundation of big sport. That's the reality. I immediately thought of Lino Ashram in Tokyo. The same heavy, awkward figure against the backdrop of our perfect Averins. It seems the body-positive plague and the cult of "food" have completely blinded the world. Everyone has decided that professionalism isn't measured by form, but by tolerance. In aesthetic sports, the body is a working tool. And a tool should be refined, honed, not shapeless. Sport is first and foremost about overcoming, not indulging your weaknesses. If you want to eat - stay at home. If you want to win - shut your mouth and work. There can be no middle ground here. 🔂Eliseevalive

i think alex honnold an amazing human being and a man of great character. hope nothing bad happens to him, like lying in bed awake at night realising that his work encourages other people to do things that lead to their death and that if he died in a climb it likely save lives

“Group of horses in broad plain, and the lead stallion is captured by a wild spirit, starts to gallop this way and that, and the whole herd follows in a great rush of power and freedom—Nietzsche talks about this. I’ve seen many things like this myself: was at big waterfall, gathering place of many birds and other animal. Through all the cycles of history this place remains and birds who witnessed the coming and going of human civilizations remember it through the aeons and always return there. I saw many group of small birds, when the weather slightly changed, this waterfall so big that a small wind would make spray of water everywhere. Sun came from behind clouds and spread many small rainbows, birds would become excited, come out from crevasses in rock face and would glory in the sprays of water and the rainbows, they swoon doing acrobatics this way and that. Like when Homer says that on some Asian meadow tribes of geese, and crane and long-necked swans glory in the power of their wings above it, then land between the rivers, in Skamandrian plain, with a great clang. Is not enough just to say, what is purpose of this to survival or reproduction? Surely some pedant can make a story. But when you see this behavior, is not so alien. Maybe, in happiest moments you were free to act and feel the same: what anything to do with survival or reproduction! That kind of heavy necessity is the spirit of gravity, and this is opposite. That petty and cramped view of life…but in truth, life as it is, when free, life in abundance knows luxury, surfeit and waste…survival and reproduction are side effects of something else…”

But I think way too much hate is directed towards strict parents of such backgrounds. Parenting style seems adaptive for surviving China during the Communist Revolution. Is it the most adaptive for children in the US? No, but you have to understand how insane that time was.

Deadlifts today ☠️💪 445 lbs. Welp I was hoping for more than one today on my top set of deadlifts, but I felt pretty weak sauce after how SLOW that first rep was. I was sick a week and a half ago, lost a couple pounds, and haven’t gained it back yet. Everything feels heavy and nothing is moving confidently. If this is how guys on a cut feel, I totally get it now. Pretty bad day at work today, no desire to show up to train, so this was a pure act of discipline. Made it worse that everything felt super heavy. As always, may the Lord be praised! #Barbell #StrengthTraining #Dominion
