@storyandplot This scene is very interesting with Dustin Hoffman being a difficult actor to work with and his agent is also the director of the film. Plus the dialogue….very good film

If there is such a thing as a perfect film, TOOTISE might be it. I liked this film when it came out and came to understand its perfection as an adult. The book MAKING TOOTSIE by Susan Dworkin, with its study of Sydney Pollack making the film, changed my writing forever. 👇 This was when I read Pollack break the entire story down as, "A man who dresses up as a woman and becomes a better man." Reading this clear, focused statement was perhaps the key moment that led to more consistency in my work. A light bulb went off. THAT is how you define a story. Two points about the screenplay by Larry Gelbart and Murray Schisgal (with uncredited assists by Elaine May and others) 1) It has a fun structure with how the hero gets what he always wanted at the midpoint, only to realize he's trapped by it. Ratatouille does something similar when Remy and Linguini are the toast of Paris, but their success makes everything worse. If I am having trouble with the midpoint, "What if I just give them what they always wanted?" remains a fun possibility. 2) There are few actual jokes in Tootsie! It is played less for laughs and more for truth, trusting that playing it as truthfully as possible will be the source of the laughs. This is how someone like Pollack, who Dabney Coleman described as, "Not the funniest guy in the world," made one of the best comedies ever. The scene here between Dorsey and his agent, George, still makes me laugh, and I must have seen it 100 times. I love this movie. An all-time classic.

A purpose of the war on Iran might well be to provoke a terrorist attack inside the United States. This would provide Donald Trump with a pretext to try to cancel or “federalize” the coming Congressional elections. snyder.substack.com/p/the-desire-f…

Dr. Norman Bethune was one of the most influential physicians of his era. He pioneered the use of a mobile blood transfusion unit in war zones, and introduced modern medicine to rural China. Revered in China, it took decades for Canada to honour him. This is his story. 🧵 1/12

At a time when most lift locks rose two metres, the Peterborough Lift Lock was a marvel of engineering. Capable of moving boats 20 metres in the air, it remains in use to this day as a vital link on the Trent-Severn Waterway. So, let's learn more about it! 🧵1/9

@accuweather In montreal they put up temporary sign to inform residents they will be removing snow the next day between 0700 and 1900. And they had a tow truck just before removing the snow. The tow truck uses flashing lights and sirens. The car maybe towed away

A man was filming from a public sidewalk when a store owner rushed out, saying he didn’t give permission and that customers were being recorded. The filmer warned him not to touch him, saying any physical contact would escalate things. Filming in public is legal - but customers also deserve privacy. So where’s the line? 📸 Public right 🏪 Business rights ⚖️ Both went too far What do you think? ⬇️ 🇺🇸
