@WillGavin It’s the ‘relies on coaches (who are also coaching and not scouting during the season) to make a highlight tape’ that seems like a slightly broken part of the system, especially given the track record in the early rounds. This definitely opens up more questions than it answers

I know this is the classic line about valuing the QB position, but the (few) cases where the 1st round succession plan succeeded, it was all with QBs with high-end tools. Patrick Mahomes, Carson Palmer, Daunte Culpepper, Aaron Rodgers, and Jordan Love are the ones I can think of. All QBs with top shelf stuff to develop.

@SamMonsonNFL Is it going to definitely put you over the top and should you have those expectations? Of course not. Does a high first round pick's potential to be an impact starter as a rookie improve your chances vs someone who likely sees zero snaps this year? Of course it does.

We talked about this on the show today a bit. The perfect parallel is when GB drafted Jordan Love. They could have had Tee Higgins. That year, they lost by 5 in the NFCCG when Davante Adams had 15 targets and the next GB WR had 6. Higgins had ~900 yards as a rookie. Would he have been the difference? Not sure, but you can't definitively say no. That's basically the debate each team had. Does this WR get us another ring while our old QB is still going vs will the QB secure the next decade after transition? I think arguing either side is reasonable.

The idea that the Rams should have punted on a future QB they love in the name of a “win-now” WR is shortsighted and foolish. No rookie can be expected to swing his team’s championship probability that much.

This is a short term issue surely, even with the NIL money they only have a certain amount of eligibility. We've also seen the impact of extra eligible years due to COVID, which we're now past. The scales will balance, deeper drafts will return.
