"Our long-term objective is clear: to replace the Labour Party as the progressive wing of politics in this country" November 1953, quoted in Alan Watkins The Liberal Dilemma (1966) pg. 91.
Estone Villan@EstoneVillan

@duke_dragon28 @BritainElects @RedfieldWilton So the Lib Dems are the party of socialism, transitioning, Palestine and rejoining the EU? I remember a time when politics was coherent. How the world has changed. So other than Brexit, Labour have completely turned their back on their original voter base. Madness

@Tony_Devenish @MattRudd @thetimes @EdwardJDavey What exactly should the third largest party in parliament be expected to achieve when the government has a massive majority? The most the somewhat larger Conservative parliamentary has achieved is making it known that Lib Dems like to fix church roofs.

Excellent piece by @MattRudd in @thetimes. ‘Who are the LibDems?’ 1st piece on @EdwardJDavey’s lazy 72 MP’s. Not a single achievement in 22 months. All talk: backgrounds & small state philosophy not the big state/high tax realities of LD Councils.

@Mangan87 @VoteGreenNorth That doesn't really refute the central point of this discussion. Labour's relative position doesn't rule out this prediction of the Lib Dem's relative position.

Labour in Westminster are building for profit, not for people. 692 private homes vs just 71 affordable in 2022/23 Families are waiting while developers cash in. In @CityWestminster, use 3 votes for Westminster Greens for more social and genuinely affordable housing.

@mcmullenshny @Alex_Niven Fukuyama explicitly said Swedish social democracy was just as much a part of the end of history as Reaganism. Ideological divides would be between differing forms of capitalism (free market vs state lead). What he failed to predict was China not Japan would embody the latter.

@Alex_Niven When Fukayama proposed the 'End of History', he posited Liberal Democracy as its destination. 'Social Democracy' was just as much the intended victim as Communism. Negative Dialectics, however, gives us the current return to authoritarianism and crypto fascism 😕

This is great. To an extent the provocation James poses here is fair, though it must be said that Mark was of his time (he basically stopped writing as Corbynism took off) in not being able to see clearly beyond existing/past socialisms. Also, how many people are doing so now?

Keir Hardie’s political awakening was, in part, via the Temperance movement. He ultimately led a party that would, in time, replace one of the default parties of government (the Liberals). Establishment politics was servile and decadent. It’s a funny old world…

@Peachy_As_Hell That seems like a strawman argument. Even the deeply anti-socialist George Watson (of the Unservile State Group) argued that socialism was a spectrum from the USSR to the Labour Right. The EIC was an example of merchantalism, and was condemned by Smith in the Wealth of Nations.

Liberal hypocrisy is insane - especially when talking about history. According to them, the USSR is the perfect representative of Socialism, but as soon as you bring up the East India Company, Condolese cobalt mines, then you're presenting a strawman argument.

I’m with Paul, and Josef Stalin, on this one. Stalin wrote in opposition to ethnically essentialist views of nationhood. Worth reading, today of all days! His one big theoretical contribution. But the ‘values’ thing is liberal waffle.

Paul Embery@PaulEmbery

Tired of politicians declaring that St George's day is a celebration of our "values". It's no such thing. "Values" are nebulous; they can change from one person to the next. National days are celebrations of national *identity*, not "values". And there's really nothing wrong with that.

The Trade Unions used to make this point when they argued about retirement rights. I wish we still had a connected left politics to the working class - the dismantling of left politics from class & connecting it to liberalism & identity politics has had so many unseen but devastating consequences

@Goulchad Isn't that attitude to taxation rather Thatcherite for a socialist party? How exactly are you going to promote a mass movement on the basis of solidarity and collect action if you claim that taxation is a burden to be avoided.

@william50847854 We see Council tax rises as cuts (in living standards) by another name and oppose them - it is part of TUSCs core program. We believe only organised resistance with firm leadership can save our communities which have lost 40%+ of funding since 2010. There is no short cut
