In light of recent events i've decided to scan and upload the book "Le Mirage Sahélien" by journalist Rémi Carayol to zlib. Provides a good summary of the history of Serval and Barkhane with all its issues. Very interesting book. Should be available within 24 hours.

The Solenzo massacre happened just about a year ago. They've done very little to prevent these acts since. There are still VDP civilian massacres in 2026. The problem is these units receive very little training if they receive any. Obviously they'll just murder ppl they dislike.

@tommymiles This is imo the biggest issue with the Azawad national project: its defenders have done a poor job at including all communities in northern Mali. It remains dominated by upper-caste Tuaregs.

@tommymiles Everything is nuanced of course, but clearly certain armed factions get more support from specific communities, no? FLA leadership is dominated by aristocratic Tuaregs, and GATIA or MSA-D are very explicitly sectarian.
Calling FLA *Tuareg rebels* is oversimplifying it though.

Multiples sources confirm a turkish presence among the security guards of Assimi Goita which is now hiding in a special forces camp.
He’s protected by both malian presidential guards (best units with the best equipements and training) and eventually some turkish mercs
Unclear if they are Sadat or just instructors

On re: location of Assimi Goita, its not clear at all and there is different rumors While his camp was indeed targeted i don’t believe he was killed. My understanding is that he is hiding somewhere with his security team. Back in november 2024 there was a video released by CANiK (turkish gun manufacturing company)showing turkish instructors training the presidential guard. There are potentially turkish security guards ensuring the safety of Assimi Goita among the presidential guard but no visual confirmation so far, hard to say wether they are just instructors/technicians (remember the whole AES relies on turkish TB-2 drones and other systems) or if it’s more than that (sadat ?)
