Long-term Mercedes W124 ownership reflects trust in engineering rather than trend chasing.
Rowan Atkinson is documented as having owned high-spec W124 variants, including the 500E, and is known for keeping cars long-term when they are built properly.
Ownership here is about durability, mechanical honesty and keeping something because it works, not because it is new.
Mr. Bean once bought an 500 E in the 90s, then sold it after 4 years of ownership and then tracked it down after 2 decades because he missed his car.
@autocar This was my first Mk4 Golf - so lovely. My second was a brand new 130 TDi GTI and it was such a great car. And you’re right about premium. The Mk5 forced me to Audi given the drop in quality. I loved both of my Golf’s ❤️
@hjwakerley The beauty of the E500 / E60 is that it’s discrete and every day usable. I ran my 500E every day in Germany and it was happy pottering about, or at the limiter on the autobahn. And only those that knew, knew. That’s what MB used to epitomise to me - no need to shout about it 👌🏻

- S Class launch edition 8/10
Kicking off with one of my dream cars, an E60. Believed to be just 45 ‘real’ E60 in the world - lots of people converted E500s. Followed by Shmee150’s AMG GT Black Series in the best colour and a mint CL500.
Another dream car (in a dream colour) a C63 AMG Black Series. I would bet there are fewer than 5 in Solar Beam yellow… lastly, many dinner plates.
Not sure who wins this round. C63 BS?

@1Percenterer This was mine. In SE spec it was a proper Q Car and uber stealthy. The power delivery was turbine smooth and instantaneously available. Beware those injectors though…….£400 each 😳
The E90 330i represents a type of everyday BMW that no longer exists.
The N52 straight-six delivers its power in a clean, rising curve, with no waiting and no surge.
Compared with the later F30 328i and its N20 turbo, the older car feels lighter on its feet because the throttle is connected directly to displacement.
As an ownership proposition it is simple: no high-pressure fuel systems, no heat-soaked turbo plumbing, just an engine that likes revs and regular maintenance.
The numbers may be similar to the turbo successor, but the sound is the reason, plus the reliability is better.
This 2001 E39 BMW 525i in Oxford Green, with matching green velour and interior trim,is surprisingly tasteful.
We need to see more colours available for interiors again.

Saturday’s classic car spot is this 1990 Mercedes C124 230CE Sportline in Astral Silver, Sportline cloth interior and Climate Control, which must have been an outrageously expensive option at the time.

Garage sort out treasures. Considering I’ve been commissioned for 11yrs I probably should hand these in, right? Can’t help liking the colour compared to what we wear now 🙄
