BREAKING: PM Carney announces Canada's first sovereign wealth fund—the Canada Strong Fund, "a fund that belongs to all Canadians... a new ownership opportunity for Canadians". Canadians will be able to directly invest in the fund, but there is no mention of dividends. UBI Works, Common Wealth Canada, and others have been calling for a SWF for years to give Canadians a share of our vast common wealth. We're glad to see movement on this, but there's a long way to go. The fund will be seeded with $25B from the government to invest in Canadian projects & companies alongside the private sector. Yet, we have trillions of dollars in minerals and other natural resources that could be invested to pay dividends and give Canadians a real stake. Let's hope this moves us towards what Norway, Alaska, and many other nations have proven to work.

April 18, 2026 — While in Augusta, Sicily, on the 11-year anniversary of one of the largest shipwrecks on the Mediterranean Sea in decades, participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla mission visited the memorial site of the tragedy that killed between 700 and 1,100 asylum seekers. We honour those who lost their lives seeking safety and a better future. We condemn the bureaucratic barriers, economic warfare, and imperial forces that drive people from their homes in search of refuge and survival. No one is illegal. It is our collective responsibility to decolonize the seas.
