If you are a manager, you've probably had someone cry in your office at least once. The human side of management is incredibly important. We're sharing more about what we are building at Riverin. @asallen I still remember talking to the Facebook feed guys when we were building Mix. It was… enlightening to say the least…

Management technique we learned early on: short-term machine learning deadlines can be set based on inputs (e.g. high-quality execution on a set of experiments) but not outputs (e.g. reaching some level of performance). Science does not bend easily to the wishes of managers.

“Are there any software engineers that switched into a machine learning role and found it a lot more stressful due to deadlines combined with the uncertainty of research?” Discussion: redd.it/ulsuzn

More than burnout and pay, the Great Resignation is driven by toxic cultures. What makes a culture toxic: disrespectful, noninclusive, unethical, cutthroat, and abusive behaviors. If leaders don't take toxicity at least as seriously as performance, Houston, we have a problem.

@jmj @wmorein Wild that this was tweeted back in 2019. Did this idea ever take off? We’re building @_wove to solve a similar problem.

Being a manager is more challenging than ever: * Fragmenting SaaS tools * Remote Work * Communication on many different platforms @wmorein & an awesome team are building a platform to solve this. If you're a manager who feels overwhelmed, try it first: riverin.typeform.com/to/ztWUKj

10 years ago we released Paper and it forever changed how I see Design. This is the untold story of how the app came to be… andy.works/words/paper-at…

@Carnage4Life Any time a role seems to exist at least in part to provide a career path you should be wary.

@NaithanJones I don’t totally disagree but literally just saw this study which talks about “poverty traps” as being really important. Haven’t read it in dept Lu yet but thought it was interesting:

@wmorein We operate similar to this, adopting @cagan's Empowered Product Team mentality and approach. We try to mitigate risk from the business, the user, the tech, and broader market.

I'm curious if anyone has a term for a dynamic I've noticed in orgs. When trying to hash out a decision in a cross functional team, sometimes (1) each member advocates strongly for their discipline's position and sometimes (2) the team members all try to take a balanced view.

The most similar idea I've seen written about is "soldier vs. scout" mentality (ideas.ted.com/why-you-think-…) but that is a bit more about individuals rather than teams. Curious if anyone has seen any other interesting discussions of this concept. Or have seen it in practice at all!

Although I have a bias for approach 2, I think that approach 1 can work well if everyone knows what is going on. The worst case is when some people on a team are playing an advocacy role and some people are playing a balanced role. That can lead to very bad outcomes.

@mronge Ouch. That is a really scary number. Through the app store or even with direct subscriptions?

@wmorein It's even tougher in app subscriptions, 20% plus a month.

3-4% churn per month is really really high for a subscription business. Would be really curious as to whether this is normal for Substack publications or if it is unique to this particular one. niemanlab.org/2021/09/what-i…

@KentBeck The coupling of ratings and compensation means that it is unrealistic to expect that employees will really improve based on feedback that comes in a review. There is too much else going on there. But taking compensation out of the discussion isn't enough either unfortunately.
