@ToddMilesHenry @FreebasePrez Yeah, it's sad... I should make up for it by pretending to be super socially conservative (though that would be a novel twist as the people I'm talking about are all on cocaine, not 7OH).

Most American rightoids who are general elite-class (very broadly speaking, say upper-middle class professional, or prosperous small business, and wealthier) are like this. The social conservatism and populism are faked, scams to create a mass constituency for tacked-on unpopular libertarian economics and/or liberal imperialism, and if you interact with them on the personal level and get to know them a little too well you'll find that they're drug users, or into shit like wife swapping, or cross-dressers, or patrons of transsexual prostitutes (this one is alarmingly common), or whatever.

It's not the pastors (except for a small minority who really do fit the dumb leftoid cliche); it's like the cul-de-sac McMansion small business types, and the "based urban dissident" types. Not every rightoid in those categories even professes social conservatism, but the ones who do are fakin' it, yo.

@wmslamcan This is just a leftist talking point "ackshually the homophobic Christian pastor is secretly gay". The reality is that they're kind of boring live laugh love people a lot of the time

Whenever I talk to the nerds of the urbane online right I always have the exact same reaction as all those guys in Idiocracy who keep saying "he talks like a fag." The joke's really on them: they're stuck with people like me as their political base, rather than say all those beautiful women surrounding them in their Blue cities for whom they have rendered themselves unfuckable by pretending to have the same cultural views as rednecks like me.

There are no “Republicans” as you understand the term. There is a loose alliance between various people who have ways to profit from the inevitable resentment against an unaccountable permanent regime. These people also serve the regime—by pretending to hold it to account
DCinvestor@DCinvestor

what’s the best, grand unified theory on why Republicans seem totally OK with losing the House and possibly the Senate in the 2026 midterms, getting their POTUS impeached, and probably losing the next presidential election in 2028?

@ecco_bravo @OVTweetmarck Sir: Thank you for praying for the mice, if you are. This means a lot to a certain animal lover very close to me.

You know this already, but the American right is completely fake. They're just classical liberals/libertarians and/or liberal imperialists. The cultural conservatism is faked to gain a mass constituency for their deeply unpopular libertarianism etc. but they resent having to do it: x.com/wmslamcan/stat…

Much has been made of this "blending" of Japanese and English X, but from what I can see, it's just a tiny crossover event consisting of people who are interested in like sharing meat dishes cross-culturally, plus some people projecting Western political contretemps onto the Japanese, and for like 99.9% of Japan X it's just business as usual. Do I have this right, @GearoidReidy?

The unfortunate side of people being interested in Japan is this -- the proliferation of this type of old wives tales, conspiratorial nonsense and outright grifting gruff.

This is great but I disagree about the capabilities of Grok. I'm a J2E translator and I use LLMs for first-pass translations for everything except certain cases where NMT with a glossary is better (manuals and such) or where it's just better to do it from scratch (certain kinds of literary/expressive prose), and if you use it at scale you will see that it still makes a lot of mistakes. Maybe one in 500 source characters or thereabouts, which would be enough for me to lose clients. (It's also notably worse than ChatGPT, which has been in my experience by far the best LLM for J2E.) As far as "high-quality translation," forget about it, unless by "high-quality" you mean like "good enough for casual Twitter use to get meaning across." If by "high-quality" you mean "publishable" then almost none of its outputs meet that benchmark (though occasionally ChatGPT will spit out a perfect sentence on the first pass with no additional prompting that makes me think "Is this thing alive?" LOL). Improvement in LLM translation seems to have plateaued, too, as I haven't noticed any significant increases in quality for some time now. (Disclaimer: I haven't done the "agentic" type stuff where LLMs are "stacked" but I'm told that it's a step sideways.) It's really odd seeing all the hype for Grok in J2E translation when ChatGPT is way better. I guess because it's embedded in Twitter, casually usable there, and therefore its abilities are more legible to the general public? Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. 😬Anyway great article.

@ScottMcConnell9 A delightful mix of "senile" and "compromised". I was such a mark for believing in "the realignment."
