Her name was Aarushi Talwar. She was 13 years old and a Class 9 student at Delhi Public School, Noida. On the morning of May 16, 2008, she was found dead in her bedroom with her throat slit. Her family’s domestic worker, Hemraj Banjade, was missing, and the police immediately declared him the prime suspect. The next day, his body was found on the terrace of the same house. He had also been murdered. Both killings had happened on the same night, inside the same apartment. Postmortem reports later showed that both victims were first hit with a blunt object and then had their throats slit with a sharp weapon. The crime scene was not secured properly. Neighbours, media, and multiple police personnel entered the house before forensic evidence could be preserved, which critically damaged the investigation. Within days, the Uttar Pradesh Police shifted suspicion to her parents, especially her father, Rajesh Talwar. The police proposed multiple theories, including claims of an “honour killing,” but none were supported by solid forensic evidence. The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation in June 2008. The first CBI team suspected three domestic workers and conducted narco and polygraph tests, but the results were inconsistent and not admissible as reliable evidence. No charges could be established, and the case was briefly called a “blind case.” A second CBI team later took over and shifted focus back to the parents, building a case based entirely on circumstantial evidence. In 2010, the CBI filed a closure report stating there was no conclusive evidence, but still named Rajesh Talwar as the main suspect. The court rejected this closure report and ordered a trial against both parents. In 2013, a special CBI court convicted Rajesh Talwar and his wife, Nupur Talwar, sentencing them to life imprisonment. In 2017, the Allahabad High Court acquitted both of them, stating that the prosecution had failed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and that the evidence had serious gaps. The court also pointed out major lapses in the investigation and inconsistencies in how evidence was handled. By the time they were acquitted, the Talwars had already spent several years in prison.
