This is unprecedented in modern human history. There was absolutely no reason or benefit for the US to do this. No sovereign country would’ve done that to itself. Mark this day as the day the US voted for a coup d’état on itself -the day the US voted to screw itself for eternity.

Generally, when countries sign a surrender document (like the June MOU), they are forced to abide by the terms out of fear of military punishment. The US is too powerful to be bound by these traditional laws of warfare. Even when it loses, it is strong enough to violate treaties and continue the fight. This is why the Vietnam War, Afghanistan War, Iraq War, and now, Iran War, long overstayed their welcome.

Conflict escalation has vindicated hardliners on both sides that the MOU was misguided. This massively increases escalation risk—but Iran still has the same leverage and the US does not.

Also, specifically on the claim that we were lying about proportionately statistics: Amnesty International, L’Orient Today, and other publications have reported that around 4,300 Lebanese have died due to Israeli strikes, with the majority being civilians. In comparison, the civilian death toll in Israel due to Hezbollah is less than 2 dozen. That translates to around 1.1 deaths per 1,000 civilians in Lebanon compared to 0.002 deaths per 1,000 in Israel.

@wrldsciences That's a blatant lie. Proportionally more Israeli civilians were killed in this war than Lebanese civilians. In any case, this statement is a red herring. A lot more Germans than Americans died during WW2, for example. In and of themselves, ratios mean nothing.

When Palestinians and Lebanese lobbed tens of thousands of rockets at Israeli cities, was it not collective punishment? When Iran launched missiles at the Gulf states and attacked international ships, was it not collective punishment? Why is this term only aimed at Israel?

You were asking why people deem the Israeli response to Palestinians/Lebanese “collective punishment” but not the other way around. This is why. You can make the argument that it is necessary or justified, but videos, images, and reports of widespread civilian suffering in Gaza and Lebanon create this perception. Outside of events like October 7th, you don’t see the same extent of civilian suffering in Israel. You can make the argument that Hamas and Hezbollah have the same intent to punish civilians in Israel en masse but lack the capability—evidence suggests that is true. But people are going to respond to the actual facts on the ground, and only one actor has the capability to routinely conduct effective punishment campaigns.
