Well, that escalated quickly. There’s been a wave of claims by cheaters about Vanguard “bricking” their PCs, so let’s clear that up: Vanguard does not damage hardware or disable your devices. The photo we posted is a picture of cheat hardware devices that are sold explicitly for cheating in VALORANT (not normal PCs or PC components). Through our latest updates, Vanguard now makes those devices worthless for VAL, but does not in any way brick PCs or PC components or PC software. Our latest update enforces standard platform security features, like the Input-Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU), on accounts identified as using Direct Memory Access (DMA) cheating devices. These protections are already part of modern systems and when enabled, they block DMA cheat devices (such as those shown in the photo) from accessing memory in downstream applications, like our games. If a cheat setup continues attempting to cheat after those protections are enabled, the system may generate hardware faults or instability. This is expected behavior under IOMMU when attempts are made to read protected memory. Disabling IOMMU allows the cheat device to function again, but IOMMU will still be required to play our games. This means the cheat device won’t work with our games, but your PC isn’t “bricked.” We would not, and cannot, impact your PC’s functionality in any other fashion. This functionality only applies to systems attempting to use DMA cheat devices, and players who are not using DMA-based cheat setups are not affected. We’ll keep investing in anti-cheat to protect competitive integrity, and we’ll keep being as transparent as possible about how those systems work.

Це добре, що США вийшли з переговорів, бо всі їх зусилля були спрямовані тільки на тиск на Україну до капітуляції. Поки в Штатах свій клоун, вони в канаві

This is not the beginning of whitewashing Russian war crimes. We are already deep into that phase. The forced displacement of millions of Ukrainians, the destruction of entire cities, the torture chambers, filtration camps, kidnapped children and mass graves are atrocities Europe has not witnessed on this scale since WW2. Yet Putin is still welcomed, still traded with, still defended by parts of the world while Russian missiles continue to hit apartment blocks, homes, hospitals and families. Frankly, it’s sickening.
KyivPost@KyivPost

For the first time since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a US official will attend Russia’s economic forum in St. Petersburg. The move comes amid cautious signs of renewed US business interest, despite Washington previously warning against normalizing ties with Moscow over the war in Ukraine. kyivpost.com/post/76635

@LurkAndLoiter The issue is that they often have dependencies on other packages from AUR, making whole thing hard to track. I always review pkgbuild files when I install something, but this is not sustainable.

I'm gonna start removing everything from AUR, and after that do the same thing with as much stuff from extra and multilib as possible. Ideally, the only thing that is installed from Arch repos is core. The end goal is to have all non-critical software come only from official flatpaks/appimages/targz, or built manually. I'm not sure how feasible it is, but feels like a worthwhile experiment. I really don't want to go down Guix/Nix rabbithole again, but those still remain as a backup plan

"But Linux package maintainers are so needed" and here we see Arch packagers hard-require a supply chain provider when you install Zed editor, even if you never plan on using it for web projects. Of course, Zed is a little bit to blame here - by default, Zed ships with Prettier enabled for JSON and markdown files, so what it'll do even if you just download it from official site - it'll detect that prettier needs to be installed, it'll download bundled nodejs and npm from nodejs site, and then will install prettier from npm (see screenshots). Completely behind your back! Now, if Linux package maintainers actually upholded their self-assigned Importance Mission, here's what they would have done: 1) Patched Zed to disable prettier by default 2) Provide npm and node as _optional dependencies_ 3) Patch out managed node/npm download from zed But instead they just decided to cope out (they will say excuses like "unpaid labor" and stuff) and subject ANYONE who wants to use Zed even for Rust/C/C++ programming to security nightmare that is npm. So yeah, Zed does some shady stuff for sure - in my humble opinion, a text editor SHOULD NOT DOWNLOAD STUFF FROM THE INTERNET BY DEFAULT BEHIND USER'S BACK. On the other hand, huge L for Arch Linux.

Bjarne Stroustrup (Creator of C++) on the costs of abstraction: "It's compiled away. This is why I talk about zero overhead abstraction. And people are beginning to take me to task for that because that's underestimating the ability of the C++ compiler. We can do negative overhead abstraction." Ryan: "What if you're really good at writing assembly and had all the time in the world to write it?" Bjarne: "If you are very smart and you have infinite time, you can do better. By and large, we are not as smart as the optimizers anymore, and we don't have infinite time."

Trump is abandoning our NATO allies left and right without consulting Congress—first Germany, and now Poland. If Trump truly cared about preventing the dictator Putin from gaining more influence in Europe and spreading his brand of brutal politics, he’d think twice before making rash decisions like this one. But Trump seems to be fine with letting Putin have what he wants. politico.com/news/2026/05/1…
