While the circumstances around her departure are deserving of our sympathy, let’s be clear: Tulsi Gabbard’s only positive contribution to our nation's national security is her resignation.
She politicized intelligence. She dismantled critical agencies keeping Americans safe. She weaponized the IC to pursue baseless election fraud claims. And more.
We must ensure that her tenure — marked by a devotion to the person of the president and not to the security of the country — represents a terrible exception at DNI and not the new normal.

President Obama laid out the democratic norm Trump has spent four years demolishing: the Attorney General serves the American people, not the president. Obama was direct — he consulted with Eric Holder on broad policy, but never on who to charge, what cases to bring, or who to prosecute.
That line exists for a reason. When a president controls who gets investigated and who gets protected, democracy stops functioning. The criminal justice system becomes a weapon.
Obama: we cannot survive the politicization of the Justice Department. We can survive bad policy. We can survive messy elections. We cannot survive a president who uses the awesome power of the state to go after political enemies and shield allies. Trump has done exactly that.
