The Indus River Basin sustains one of the world’s largest contiguous irrigation systems, provides over 80 percent of Pakistan’s agricultural water needs, and supports the lives and livelihoods of over 240 million people. For more than six decades, the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960 has provided a time-tested framework for equitable and predictable management of the waters of the Indus River basin. India’s unilateral decision to hold the Treaty in abeyance last year in April, followed by material breaches; including unannounced disruptions of downstream flows and withholding of hydrological information; has created an unprecedented crisis for Pakistan’s water security and for regional stability. This is not nature's doing. This is a nation state deliberately weaponizing water. Pakistan’s position is unequivocal; the Treaty remains legally intact and permits no unilateral suspension or modification.

It was a privilege to address the seminar, “Indus Waters Treaty: An Instrument of Regional Peace and Stability,” where leading experts from Pakistan and abroad discussed one of the defining challenges of our time in South Asia. I underscored that the Indus Waters Treaty is not merely a water-sharing arrangement but a vital instrument of regional peace, stability, and cooperation. Shared waters must never be weaponized. They must remain a bridge between nations, guided by cooperation, dialogue, and respect for international law. Any attempt to deprive Pakistan of its rights under the Treaty would have profound consequences for regional peace and security, undermining the shared interests of nearly two billion people of South Asia.

📢 At the Jinnah Convention Centre Islamabad, Mehr Ali Shah stated Pakistan fulfills its IWT obligations, but India has halted Commission meetings since May 2022 & monthly data since Aug 2023. This prolonged non engagement risks avoidable escalation. ⚖️ The Court of Arbitration ruled that India's non participation does not affect its competence. Its awards are final & binding. India must let Western rivers flow under strict treaty exceptions. @GovtofPakistan @ForeignOfficePk @mopofficial @kdawn_news @geonews_english @ExpressTribune @therepublicpk @DevelopingPak @PTVNewsOfficial @pid_gov @ForeignOfficePk @AmbassadorPak #International_IWT_Seminar #IWTSeminarIslamabad #IWT #Pakistan

@MIshaqDar50 Rightly said that India is sowing seeds of war in South Asia by trying to block rivers flowing towards Pakistan. Pakistan will be left no option other than fighting for is future generations.

Everyone is outraging after The Economist article on India’s pathetic government websites. The elephant in the room: We need a smart, educated, English speaking, well read, tech savvy politician who has his heart in the right place. A visionary, a dreamer, a doer. A secular democrat. A sense of humour too. What we have is substandard, subpar frauds. India has moved beyond these old fogey wheeler dealer criminal variety of crooks masquerading as our hope.
