Italy 🇮🇹 economic problems cannot be solved unless we finally accept that the root cause is not something that happened 24 to 34 years ago, but something that happened 62 to 52 years ago. Italy 🇮🇹 hasn’t had a working social contract for longer than my own life. The economic decline is downstream from there. The problem is that the electorate is not going to accept we need to fundamentally change the social contract. I once voted for the nuclear energy is a referendum where my side got like 5% of the votes. If we voted on a referendum for the new social contract we need, my side would be amazed to get the 0.5%, let alone the 5%. This is sadly a problem not limited to Italy 🇮🇹. The economic decline of the West has many causes, but at the root there is a complete fundamental misunderstanding of how the world works from a staggering majority of the population - elite included. It is an amazingly complex problem.

Giorgia Meloni is a much over-rated politician, especially abroad. Since coming to power, she and her government managed to keep off the radar screen of the bond market vigilantes, but they have not solved a single of Italy festering structural economic problems, like bureaucratic inertia and weak capital markets. This has been a country with practically zero  productivity growth for a quarter of a century. Instead, like other failing Italian prime ministers before her, she wasted her political capital on another silly electoral reform, which has now been defeated.  Our lead story this morning.  eurointelligence.com

@Baezantium Venice was ruled by merchant houses, not bureaucrats. That's why its government was competent and its people were free.

You'd expect Venice's long history to come with a litany of great leaders throughout the centuries, but you can probably name maybe no more than two. The Venetian State was the first of its kind, a faceless bureaucratic machine with the world's first professional secret service.

My Roman Empire is actually The Most Serene Republic of Venice. *1100 years*. It lasted longer than the Roman Republic and Empire combined. Scores of colonies all the way to Cyprus, fabulous wealth, totally unique culture, all from a city built in the middle of a lagoon.

@animusiavarone @Bulkington___ important to know that this "lost world" is a fictional one. even when these works were painted life between roman ruins didn't look like that. the artist erased signs of contemporary life and exaggerated the scale of the density and scale of the ruins

@Bulkington___ This is one of my favorite types of art. I’ve been seeking it out lately. It’s like a snapshot of a lost world. I’m not a big art enthusiast but these images are majestic to me.

Always fascinated how people in the middle ages for hundreds of years just lived amongst the ever decrepitating Roman ruins. It was just a part of daily life for them.

O ambas.

@StarkyTheSald @Phibies8 if the world is caput next week you're not going to have "nice" conclusions for each plot lines, that's how it is. and before reading comprehension devil gets you this doesn't mean "bad on purpose"

@Phibies8 We want part 3 because a lot of plotlines and arcs in part 2 are not even close to having a good conclusion yet. I love part 1 and part 2, but it's not at a place where it can wrap up nicely in 1 chapter
