“It’s already difficult to find good engineers” Agreed. I’ve had a LOT of trouble convincing several Berkeley, Caltech, & Stanford PhDs with specialties in photonics, nano fabrication, and metamaterials to turn down tenure track professor job offers to join my company as well. Oh … wait. What do you guys do? An AI app for note taking? And you can’t find people who can write Python?

@herbivoryze 1. You need a team, some credence 2. Connection with professionals who have thought about the problem 3. A really solid pitch, why this conference should happen, what it aims to achieve, etc 4. Funding, Navigation Fund is maybe your best bet contingent on 1-3 being fulfilled

Finished MIRI book. Many quite invalid arguments. Will do longer reviews later. It does kinda appear to me that the "someone genuinely skeptical of the argument" was not among the beta readers. Just feels overworkshopped with friendly readers.

@smugjd @MariGO2thepolls If a "ton" of us were, I would've seen it or heard about it during IRL meet ups and conferences. Further, those discussions would have dominated the forum, shaped community events and goals, etc. Seems plausible that your perception is majorly skewed by online chatter.

I keep scrolling by people saying that withholding resources other people need to live is “also a form of political violence” and the funny logical endpoint of this is “It’s political violence to not be an effective altruist”

The global fertility rate suddenly started falling 4.5x faster in 2016. (Slope of -0.009 from 2006-2016, then -0.041 from 2016-2023!)

levels of grift that are incomprehensible to people who are honest and can’t conceptualize how 6D chess is played People like Yud provide no value, they exist because they can capture the attention of groups large enough that they can to strive, but take away the idiots he manages to convince and what is left of Yud except Harry Potter fanfiction?

@nytimes book review “The book reads like a Scientology manual … Following their unspooling tangents evokes the feeling of being locked in a room with the most annoying students you met in college while they try mushrooms for the first time.”

@funnyjaye125691 @panickssery Ok, but Noah, Yglesias, and Klein constantly talk about correcting economic failures. Yglesias has definitely written about demographic concerns. It's more likely that they believe social media is one of many issues that leads to right wing surges, but not the only one!

The extreme Internet censorship we see in Britain and elsewhere was totally predictable and if Harris was elected we would have seen agitation for it here Our own "smart liberals" Yglesias, Klein, Smith, Shor, etc push the same narrative that unregulated social media, rather than economic or demographic concerns, is to blame for right-wing surges, and endorse govt censorship they can cement their control over the discourse—politicians follow their lead Harris, 2019: "We will double the civil rights division and direct law enforcement to counter this extremism. We will hold social media platforms accountable for the hate infiltrating their platforms" This is the most dangerous threat to our civil liberties in America because it could permanently cripple discourse about the issues with our governance (the Yglesias article below was originally titled "How to Regulate Facebook and Twitter" before it was changed)

A take: LinkedIn is the healthiest social media platform right now. Hot take: We should Linkedin-ify all social media. Yes, it's a good thing when every other post is not a video of someone dying!
