@Chudy1st @adetipzy Ooh the trauma. Naaa. I will pass. I'd rather learn from new England medical journals and in rare cases, the benevolent physicians.

@youngarchangel @adetipzy Really won't blame you for Ur aversion to these rounds. Folks have turned it to slug fests in some instances. However rounds are also avenues for planning patient care, learning, amongst many other things.

The ides that nurses need to join ward rounds to "Learn" is a very demeaning and insulting statement to the nursing professionals. So you mean someone that has a degree from a certified school of nursing and has been practicing for 3 years needs to join your ward round to learn their job. I can understand a lot of benefits and potential reasons why a multidisciplinary ward round makes sense and is sometimes needed. However thw blanket statement that nurses should always join ward rounds shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of the ward round amd the responsibilities of the physician.

Ward rounds in Nigeria is not MDT. This is a standard multidisciplinary team includes physicians, registered nurses, clinical pharmacists, registered dietitians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, licensed social workers, case managers, and clinical psychologists etc. What you have in Nigeria is doctors from different specialtiaties having a discussion while the nurse is most times expected to look on.

“I am a nurse and I don’t see any reason why a nurse should join ward round except MDT” You realize that ward rounds in Naija is their own MDT or are there centers in Naija where after ward rounds the team meets to discuss the patients ?
FinestDoveTruth@FinestDoveTruth

Again, this is not because the nurse did not attend ward round. This is a nurse doing what she is not allowed to do and doing it ignorantly. Where in this world is a nurse who is not a prescriber allowed to prescribe medication?? Let’s be honest about things. I am a nurse and I don’t see any reason a nurse should join ward round except MDT. If you work abroad, you cannot ask any nurse to join ward round. They don’t even have that time. And if they want to, it is a choice. And in hospitals where it’s a must for everyone to join, nurses would be the one to anchor it… you are not there to teach me anything. I’m there to input stuff. If I learn while you are trying to teach your student, good for me… But don’t talk to me like a student. I am not. If the type of ward rounds that most Nigerian doctor anchor happens in abroad, many of the Nigeria doctors, will likely loose their job. You cannot ask me to go and look for stethoscope for you, you can’t ask me to go and look for patient file for you, I won’t even do it, you can’t be asking me question that I didn’t prepare for in front of patient, you can’t ask me anything and shame me for not knowing it. I am a nurse, I don’t have to know 99% of your job before you see me as your colleague. Again, ward round is not a must. If the nurse wants to, the doctor should accommodate it but not demand it…

@BecomingKm You read a basic medical surgical textbook, then turn around to argue, expecting it to have the nitty gritty of neuro ICU nursing. What a smart guy

I was a little bit idle today and I decided to read Brunner and Suddarth's textbook of medical surgical nursing and honestly I have literally laughed. Because, tell me why from a neuro-intensive care perspective, the book's guidance on complex hemodynamics in the neuro ICU such as managing Cerebral Perfusion Pressure (CPP) versus Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) in severe traumatic brain injury is overly generalized. It leans heavily on basic nursing monitoring (e.g., checking pupils and tracking the Glasgow Coma Scale) while glossing over the messy, hyper-nuanced realities of multimodal neuromonitoring and aggressive, time-sensitive neurointerventional protocols. But anyway...!

Thank you for explaining it. Now I wonder why that doctor is dragging nurses to "his" ward rounds. Can't "he" do his job alone? I mean with his residents and students. They say he carries all professional liabilities unlike nurses.
Nigerian Doctor@Nigerian_Doctor

A Doctor’s ward round, Is a Doctor’s ward round, As the name literally implies. It is his or her ward round. Nurses, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Dietitians, all have ward rounds too. Not a failed health system. Just a sad knowledge deficit on your part.

Nurses used to join ward rounds. What changed should be your question? And I most tell you, the new crops of nurses would rather quit their jobs than join any rounds ever again. Do your rounds, write your recs and keep moving. We've "learnt" a lot from you all and we say NOPE. Never again.

@ThatCruiseMedic Having a tray set for you for a one man procedure like cannulation is absolutely the most fatuous and asinine thing I have read today. Nigerian nurses, you guys are really trying

"With loyalty will I endeavour to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care" (Florence Nightingale pledge of 1893) Where I did my NYSC nurses do their own rounds, then follow physicians for their ward rounds, take note of important changes such as medication during rounds and assist physicians for every procedure. But in public teaching hospitals just forget about it, that's the ghetto, assisting a physician is termed slavery. Tell them to set up things for basic cannulation some of them will refuse and tell you that they are not your slave but one thing they forget is that, they are the ward managers, the patient has to pay for the cannulas and hospital management has entrusted you with that responsibility, so how are you going to know the exact number of cannulas the doctor used if you don't bring it out yourself?
Diary of a Female Surgery Resident@drhephzibah1

Nurses ought to join Doctors wardrounds. If you've not been doing that, you need to start. Even if it is a house officer, join that rounds, unless he/she's just doing a check check in with the patients. If he/she is doing procedures, you should assist.

If rounds includes berating and humiliating your students and residents in front of everyone then no we don't. If you want to teach your students during rounds, go ahead, I have other 31 things to do. If you want to see patients and exchange inputs, then we are game.

I doubt she is talking about herself. ""Men and women with a gene mutation in either BRCA1 or BRCA2 are at heightened risk for certain cancers, including breast cancer in both men and women, as well as ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. These gene mutations can be passed on to male and female children by either men or women'"
Item Inya Item@Healthwolf2

Menya, you cannot "get" breast cancer from a man, no matter how it runs in their family. Breast cancer is not a sexually transmitted disease. Kissing, sex, sharing a home, or marrying someone does not transmit breast cancer.
