Thanks for all the kind Birthday wishes! Saw "Michael" & loved it. Focused on being entertained & not the horrendous stuff about him. Or that the family produced it. I just love the music. After, Thai food, dk chocolate, & watched Jon Stewart who loves the absurd as much as I do.

I have lots of new writing groups. One group decided to become an incubator for micro-dramas & verticals, rather than working on their usual scripts. One of the few areas #newbies are breaking in. It's already becoming very competitive, exploding with new writers. Get in now!

We updated our style for telephone numbers in 2024 to drop parentheses. We now recommend the form: 212-621-1500. For international numbers use 011 (from the United States), the country code, the city code and the telephone number: 011-44-20-7535-1515. Use hyphens, not periods. No parentheses. The form for toll-free numbers: 800-111-1000. If extension numbers are needed, use a comma to separate the main number from the extension: 212-621-1500, Ext. 2.

@mattj65816 @APStylebook Absolutely no, back in the day of home phones, even the next area with the same area code was billed long distance.

@APStylebook I assume the area code was originally parenthesized because people called on local exchanges 99% of the time and didn't need it. It was only needed on long distance calls (which cost $∞/min.) Now cellphones require them all the time. If so, the parentheses are obsolete.

@EmilyAPaschall Not other subject or classroom teachers, yet my experience is that actual teachers in special education are the ones perpetuating this. Have heard this so many times, years and cringed so many times.

Stop calling them “SPED kids.” Students are students first. Having an IEP doesn’t change that. It doesn’t lower expectations, and it doesn’t mean we stop problem solving at Tier 1 and Tier 2. Strong core instruction still matters every single day. The goal is always growth and independence. That only happens when students are supported across all tiers, not separated by a label. And language matters. They are not “SPED kids.” They are students first, each with unique needs we’re responsible for meeting. That difference matters. It shows up in how we teach, how we support, and how we see them.

@vickyweberbooks With the rise of AI slop and illiteracy in young people, those who work to produce meaningful, human art are invaluable. It's discouraging to see what's happening to the industry, but the way I see it, the more weed-choked the garden is, the more precious those good seeds become.

Editors I respect are leaving. Books sections are closing. I'm watching this industry shrink in real time, and I don't have a neat answer for what comes next—but I think pretending everything is fine is worse than talking about it.

@HeddenWrites …are you serious? How on earth do you expect me to represent (and sell) thousands of authors every year? You know that publishers are the ones buying manuscripts, right?

Interesting video here. I've always been a paper worksheet chemistry teacher, where students "show their work" below the printed questions. Issues like these are often far more complex than we initially realize.
Jon Bergmann@jonbergmann

Confession: I was letting my kids stare at screens too much. I've committed to paper assignments this quarter and it's been magical! Students are engaged, talking, and truly learning. Analog roots are making a comeback. #Education #DigitalDetox

@sheribarbera I think it's okay if someone made a mistake, recognizes it, and promises to do better. Then they must or they're out.

A #newbie made a big mistake, flaking on a writer friend, ruining a treasured relationship. Asked if I maintained friendships over yrs. YES! I treat others the way I want to be treated. I'm reliable, loyal. Not everyone is. It takes effort. Being unselfish. I value those people!

@greythorntales That's true. Maybe I try to recreate my own experience of that social network which I loved. It starts as strangers being nice to each other and grows into a mutual beneficial society with deep connections. I DO see it in my groups every day. I know you are running with it!

1 of my mentors, Lowell Ganz on a podcast: They used to find TV writers EVERYWHERE! Loved giving people breaks bec he got one from Garry Marshall. Lowell broke in when his partner's Dad, a LIMO driver, gave their script to his fares, stars of The Odd Couple! Who gave it to Garry!

@MatRyanELATeach @jonmedeiros I'm not sure how is watching that movie foundation for reading Shakespeare? Matt, apparently this is a play you love. Completely okay + share that comprehension takes effort. Rereading + introducing this effort is excellent.
