@mattyglesias Violent deaths defined to be those "killed in or because of fighting" (per the characterisation of family members). Not a very helpful category.

@clairlemon One need only look to the evidence from the trial of the ISIS terrorists in Manchester to expose how fallacious is the myth, pedaled by the PM among others, that ISIS supporters cannot be Hamas or Palestinian supporters.

Apparently not wanting Israel to exist is not antisemitic. I give up 🤷‍♀️
Jarryd Bartle@JarrydBartle

@clairlemon I'm not denying that many groups in the Middle East do not want Israel to exist (which is not, in itself, an 'anti-semitic' belief) . But you're trying to conflate support for Palestine with the legitimisation of Salafi jihadism which is complete nonsense.

@RoseMountTory @kilovh the arch of titus is only one of very many historical relics, contemporaneous with the temple, that show the menorah as being curved

the Lubavitcher Rebbe insists on the straight-armed menorah because it is the menorah as Torah gives it to us. The Lubavitcher Rebbe does not believe that things that are not Torah are Torah. He believes that Torah factuality is literally immovable by worldly factuality, and, I suspect, that everyone who departs from this belief is actually weakening Yiddishkeit, because worldly factuality per se hates Jews and Judaism and wants them to not exist If the two factualities appear to contradict, as they do every time G-d says you're the apple of his eye while a cossack tramples you into the mud, what will keep you Jewish and kept your grandparents Jewish is resisting the urge to give the cossack a say in reality. Being Jewish has always required understanding that he does not have a say. But when instead of a cossack it's "being reasonable" or "offering a Judaism convincing on non-Jewish grounds" or G-d forbid "being a professor," Jews don't hesitate. and this lack of hesitation is, I suspect, what bothers the Lubavitcher Rebbe

See, if you treat suicide bombing as “barbarism” - “what kind of culture does this?”, you’ll respond with an “exterminate all the brutes” kind of mindset. If you instead see it as a type of modern political violence, you can understand the politics and address root causes
Eyal Yakoby@EYakoby

“Suicide bombing needs to be understood as a feature of modern political violence rather than stigmatized.” These are the words of Zohran Mamdani’s father, a current professor at Columbia.

@JosephNWalker I meant that it is excellent that the country's decision makers are aware of and paying attention to your extremely valuable (and all too rare) contributions. But I will read the speech on your recommendation.

@IsraelBisk No: he was abducted because he was an active-duty IDF soldier on a military base. Parties at war have been taking active-duty soldiers for as long as war exists. They're called "prisoners of war." Except when IDF soldiers are taken; then they're innocent "hostages."

Coming off a strong win, selection will be interesting against the Giants In: Steele, King, Henry Out: Hastie, Keeler, Travaglia Sub: Garcia Garcia was solid but we need Steele back. I want LOC for Byrnes but that might be too defensive. Henry mid/fwd. Jones on Trav's wing

@KreaseChan Your article contains a sleight of hand. It is ofc legitimate to argue for new or different interpretations of a legal standard, but until accepted by a law-making body (ICJ or otherwise) it remains at the level of submission, not law.

Did Amnesty International invent its own definition of genocide? (That’s the line from the apartheid regime in Israel). In brief, no we didn’t, and serious lawyers know that. More here: thejournal.ie/amnesty-intern…

NEW The heads of Australia's Federal Police and spy agency ASIO have announced a couple with Russian passports and naturalised Australian, involving a female Army private, are accused of accessing security material and charged with preparing for espionage offence. 'No significant compromise has been identified at this stage.' The couple obtained citizenship in (female) 2016 and (male) 2020. ASIO's Mike Burgess says 'defence awareness' led to them becoming aware of their alleged activity.

The leap, then the crafty mark (albeit against a fellow rookie). We're going to see a lot of this with that running power always getting him into the right spots and causing confusion amongst opp. defenders
TauROO@alkaiuf_

He also led the ground for contested marks. This is an area that has seriously been underrated by the media. His vertical is so good he almost outpoints opposition the same way King does with his height. Genuine forward-half wildcard player

So it’s… Caminiti in for King Butler in for Henry Jones starts for Mason The only other change/inclusion will be the sub. That might make them avoid a debut again? The next 2 in line are both debutants though…🤷🏼‍♂️

Saddened to hear of Daniel Kahneman’s passing. I had the honour of recording a conversation with him in New York last year. He was kind and gentle, and incredibly sharp. A generous interlocutor. I travel with a bag of books for interview prep. After the interview, as we were leaving the room, I pointed out Josh Shenk’s book Powers of Two: “You can have my copy if you like. But it’s a bit of a journalistic airport book.” “I love journalistic airport books,” he said, taking the book. As I walked him down to the lobby, he suggested questions for an upcoming interview I had with another economics Nobel laureate. And offered to connect me with a friend of his for an interview. What struck me most during our interview was his intellectual humility. A true mensch. Rest in peace. josephnoelwalker.com/143-daniel-kah…
