America’s “Favor” That Powers Its Empire U.S. troops in Germany are not there out of charity—and certainly not to “protect” Germans. They are there because without German soil, American global reach doesn’t function. Ramstein is the largest U.S. air base outside America. Stuttgart hosts EUCOM and AFRICOM—the command centers for operations across Europe and Africa. Landstuhl has been the lifeline for wounded U.S. soldiers from Iraq to Afghanistan. Even drone operations in places like Somalia rely on infrastructure routed through Germany. Remove that, and you don’t weaken Berlin—you blind Washington. Yet somehow the narrative persists: America is doing Germany a favour. That Europe is the dependent, the beneficiary, the so-called “freeloader.” It’s a convenient story. It’s also strategically backwards. Because the reality is simple: those bases are not acts of generosity. They are instruments of power. And they exist in Germany not for Germany’s benefit—but for America’s ability to operate far beyond its own borders. Take them away, and the question isn’t what Germany loses. It’s how much the United States does.

@Tuingevoelnl @mariekehoogwout In de EU zijn nu ca. 1,2 miljoen asielzoekers (meeste in DL, Spanje, Italië; NL hiervan ca. 3,5%). In Afrika worden ca. 35 miljoen vluchtelingen opgevangen (bv. Oeganda 380 per 10.000 inwoners). Libanon vangt in z'n eentje 1,5 miljoen vluchtelingen op (2800 per 10.000).

@Ludoge @mariekehoogwout Je kunt ook zeggen er wonen 1.4 miljard mensen in Afrika. Dus per saldo moeten we wel mensen opvangen hier m, omdat we met minder zijn in Europa. Er is altijd een reden. Of niet Ludo?

@Tuingevoelnl @mariekehoogwout Je draait de cijfers nu precies om. Noord- en Zuid-Holland vangen naast Gelderland veruit de meeste vluchtelingen op. Door het hoge inwonersaantal is de uitkomst van de berekening per 10.000 per definitie lager. Dat gaat hier niet om "moeten" maar een simpele rekensom.

@mariekehoogwout En wat? Dus uit het kaartje kan je afleiden dat het dichtbevolkte Zuid-Holland - begrijpelijkerwijs - veel meer asielzoekers opvangt dan bijvoorbeeld Overijssel, Limburg of Zeeland.

@mariekehoogwout Noord-Holland (8660), Gelderland (8593) en Zuid-Holland (7987) vangen de meeste asielzoekers op (vgl: Overijssel 3817, Limburg 2934, Zeeland 1611). Zuid-Holland heeft de hoogste taakstelling voor huisvesting van statushouders plus veel arbeidsmigranten.

@BenGrahamUK Here it was a field fire nearby. After a fire there's a technical (and in case of suspected intent also criminal) investigation to establish the cause of the fire. If you don't find enough information in the news, you can request the report from the authorities.

@JohnCleese I wouldn't want to speculate on the origin of the fires, but I find it strange that we aren't hearing the cause of these types of fires.

Does anyone believe these church fires are coincidental ?

@ValentinaForUSA @YossiBenYakar (2) What are the odds. There are far more churches fires than mosque fires. Mosque fires (like in Jargeau, France) are more often than church fires caused by arson, but in most cases fires are caused by accident and negligence.

In Western Europe there are far more churches than mosques and many are hundreds of years old, they are technically not fire proof, wooden structures, unsafe electrical wiring The fire in Montenach was caused by a fire in a nearby field and draught.

@JDSnel @jan_kas Toen Beatrix koningin werd, werd er gespeculeerd (te meer daar haar tweede naam Wilhelmina is) en had ik inderdaad gehoopt dat Koninginnedag (weer) naar 31 augustus zou schuiven.

Amalia is jarig op 7 december, even ongeschikt voor Koniginnedag als de geboortedag (31 januari) Beatrix. Zij kan dan misschien kiezen voor 31 augustus, de originele Koninginnedag van Wilhelmina. In een lange periode zonder andere feestdagen.

@UjaOliver So you're saying human decency can only exist under monarchical systems? Wouldn't that be an insult to every American father and mother who tries to teach their children some common manners. In my experience certainly not all Americans are that rude and narcissistic.

@BmakinMusic @mark_slapinski You are very right. America doesn't practice the monarchical system and I don't expect Trump to abide by their norms. Those norms should be strictly adhered to within Britain and people still under their colonial authority.

@VantagePointHQx No, the name Obamacare was made up by its opponents in 2007. It was only during his 2012 campaign Obama said he kind of liked this (Republican) nickname. The name came up in debates but has never been the official name for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

@BurtMaclin_FBI You know that kingdoms (like UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Scandinavian countries, Spain) are far less authoritarian than the US, where contrary to constitutional monarchies much power is given to one man. Their whole point is, they don't want to follow leaders as Americans do.
