𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗥𝗛𝗥 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 What does it take to move #SelfCare from concept to practice within the health system? This publication takes a closer look at the legal and policy environment shaping self-care for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Uganda. It maps existing laws, policies, strategies, and guidelines, revealing both the progress made and the gaps that continue to limit effective implementation. The report came at a critical time, as self-care gained recognition as a practical, people-centered approach to expanding access to health services. Since 2020, CEHURD has worked with partners under the Self-Care Trailblazer Group (@SelfCare4UHC) to strengthen coordination and advocacy toward institutionalizing self-care in Uganda. What this really shows is that policies exist, but aligning them and closing the gaps is key to making self-care work for the people who need it most. In 2016, 600 rural African women marched to the base of Kilimanjaro for land rights. 60 reached the summit. Ten years later, their struggle continues. Despite 15+ legal and policy gains across Africa, the land ownership gap for women remains stubbornly wide while funding for women-led land justice movements continues to shrink. In Bibia Upper cell; Yes VHTs, peers and local leaders highlighted SRHR, TB, and HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services delivery gaps in their cell and we crafted the locally led solutions on top of what they are implementing. Health systems are improving gradually.

Grateful to @uwonet for organizing the impactful WPS capacity enhancement training in Yumbe. Bringing together district leaders, women, peace activists & mediators, the engagement is strengthening women’s role in peacebuilding, conflict management & access to justice.

@uwonet in collaboration with @yugnet2010 with funding support from @KvinnaKvinnaINT is conducting a two days training in Yumbe District with peace builders and mediators to strengthen the capacity of women and women-led systems.

The capacity enhancement activities build on previous initiatives aimed at strengthening the participation of women in peace processes, while building synergy with the district Local Government to respond effectively to women’s peace concerns.

During the Quarterly National Self-Care Network Partners Coordination Meeting, partners shared their implementation of #SelfCare across their programs and services; @paceUganda has scaled up DMPA-SC self-injection across 51 districts, reaching over 311,000 visits through awareness campaigns, provider training, and strengthened supply and reporting systems.  The Palliative Care Association of Uganda (@PCAUganda) has integrated self-care into palliative services, equipping patients and caregivers to manage symptoms at home while preventing caregiver burnout.  @reachahand has empowered youth by improving access to health services, promoting responsible contraceptive use and self-testing, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and supporting confidential self-injectables with digital wellness and peer guidance.  @TEGEM_Ug has engaged cultural and religious leaders to institutionalize self-care, supported Community-Based Distribution of DMPA-SC across three districts, and integrated these activities with interventions like hormonal IUDs, while addressing data gaps.  @MarieStopesUg has rolled out eCHIS to track community health services, monitored HIV self-testing and DMPA-SC uptake across 13 districts, expanded private sector access to contraception, and launched a staff wellness program including aerobics, mental health counseling, and talks on nutrition, mental health, and financial literacy. @UnesoUganda ; Their integration of self-care centers on ensuring that self-care strategies and health services are accessible and tailored to the needs of sex workers and other key populations. #SelfCare4UHC

Women, Peace and Security Agenda! Today we pick up from where we ended last week. We spent 2 days in Kasese in a capacity enhancement activity with peace builders and mediators to strengthen the capacity of women and women-led systems to participate effectively in peace building and conflict management. We had reflective discussions on what is needed for sustainable peace and how women at different levels can meaningfully contribute. Today marks day 1 of the same engagement in Yumbe District. In the room are stakeholders from Yumbe District Local Government, and women peace activists and mediators. The capacity enhancement activities build on previous initiatives aimed at strengthening the participation of women in peace processes, while building synergy with the district Local Government to respond effectively to women’s peace concerns. This time around, access to justice needs is central to the peacebuilding discourse.
