What most people don't realise is that cancer is not just a genetic disease or a signalling disease. It is also a metabolic disease. Tumour cells don't just grow because a pathway is switched on. They grow because they reprogram metabolism to support continuous biomass production, proteins, lipids, nucleotides, and ribosomes. This is why cancer cells increase glycolysis (the Warburg effect), increase glutamine metabolism, increase lipid synthesis, and increase mitochondrial activity. All of this is to support one thing: building more cell. A tumour is not just a group of mutated cells. It is a system that is actively trying to build more of itself. And building more of itself requires energy and raw materials. Growth signalling pathways like PI3K-AKT-mTOR and MYC tell the cell to build biomass and divide. But those signals only work if the cell has the energy and raw materials to physically construct another cell. Growth is a construction problem, not just a signalling problem. Cells are controlled by signalling pathways. Growth requires energy and raw materials. Metabolism provides the energy and materials. So increasing metabolic activity increases the capacity for growth. So the important biological question is not whether something "boosts mitochondria" or "increases cellular energy". The question is what happens when you increase metabolic capacity in a tissue where growth signalling is already telling cells to proliferate.
