I finally discovered why they are doing this! The new Kindle devices have ads in them, which you have to pay extra to remove them. I’m assuming they couldn’t put ads on the old Kindles. Sooner or later the ads will play every other page! We live in corporate hell now!

Making open internet access conditional on owning a credit card or having a valid ID is textbook digital exclusion.
It instantly creates a two-tier society, locking millions of adults - especially those who are poor, elderly or disabled - out of the digital public square and leaving them with "child locked" devices.
Access to the open internet is a basic right, not a privilege reserved for those with the "right" paperwork.
