@dlmillimet There’s a lot of variation in what’s considered a “reasonable” setup, but I’ve done pretty well with the Breville Infuser paired with a Baratza Virtuoso grinder for the past five years. Haven’t been able to justify an upgrade with either, sadly!

📊 At the heart of @AndrewCShaver and my new paper is a *really cool* #geocoded dataset of displacement locations from UNHCR @Refugees. We want to share it publicly in an open & transparent way. Hence a “living dataset” on @github: github.com/global-displac… Check it out!
Andrew Shaver@AndrewCShaver

A new "living" global refugee locations dataset (n>13k) is now available on @github. The data were used in @yangyang_zhou and my new #nulleffects paper on refugees and civil conflict @apsrjournal: github.com/global-displac… 1/

🚨🚨🚨 My paper w. @AndrewCShaver is out @apsrjournal! #polisciresearch Does hosting refugees increase conflict & violence? No! Using new data on where refugees are located, we find no effects & in some cases, conflict reduction. @UBCpolisci @CIFAR_News @CEGA_UC @womenalsoknow

Happy Friday! Excited to share my essay for the APSA CP Newsletter, "Studying Migrant Exclusion within the Global South" (p.66) 👇 comparativepoliticsnewsletter.org/wp-content/upl… It's an opportunity for me to preview the big Qs and args in my book project while highlighting others' work in this area.

I think providing students with increasing opportunities to work with data, to build out data visualizations and regression tables, pays off. It also allows (forces?) them to develop projects suited to their own interests, rather than more prescribed problem sets and exams.

I've been increasingly impressed by my students' ability to pursue original research. Topics today included reverse "brain drain" exploiting a LinkedIn-World Bank dataset, internal and international migration in Bhutan, and the effect of ID restrictions on Palestinian migration.

Just taught my last class, ECON 483: Politics and Economics of migration. I always end with student presentations: I want to provide them a platform to showcase their work. Presenting is a valuable skill, and without the opportunity to practice it, much academic work goes unseen.
