Once, Telecel was the Zimbabwe's second largest mobile phone operator. Now, the company is going under Corporate Rescue. A notice today says: “The Corporate Rescue process is designed to rehabilitate the company and does not signify an intention to liquidate.” The company has suffered years of under-investment due to shareholder disputes that led to government taking a controversial 60% stake in the company, via state firm Zarnet. Telecel's fall, by the numbers: · Telecel has just 319,548 subscribers, less than 2% market share, in a sector dominated by leading operator Econet (73%) · The company carries just 0.02% of voice calls, compared to Econet (87.61%) and NetOne (12.3%). It has just 0.16% of the internet traffic. · Telecel has 17 LTE base stations (compared to Econet’s 1,700). The company has zero 5G sites
