Yup. I literally went through this and made it. Went to NYU Tisch. Graduated top of my class while doing a music video/commercial business that generated 100mil views. Got top manager who repped A-listers. Ended up writing for ABC Network as a staff writer. Then COVID hit and everything changed. My show got canceled… then HW didn’t wanna take risks anymore. No jobs so I got dropped by my reps. I ended up writing a whole book cause screw it… forgot my dream of being a director. Then AI came and now I’m finally doing exactly what I want to do, making the films that I see in my head. It saved me.

The part nobody talks about in the AI film debate: The traditional pipeline was already brutal before any of this. You graduate from film school - almost always in debt unless you are born very lucky. You spend years as a PA or an assistant for someone awesome (if you’re very lucky.) But most just grind on sets for nothing. You try to get into the guild. You wait for someone to give you permission to make something. It only comes if you’re very very very lucky… sometimes talented.., but always lucky. And most, even the most talented of the top film schools in the world wash out and do something else by the time they’re 30. Not because they lacked craft. Because the system has a thousand gatekeepers and almost no doors. AI isn’t breaking the system. The system was already broken. We just have a scapegoat now…. And an opportunity.

No...I still love painting. Mostly I love the process of it and the problem solving and work required to make an image with paint. I personally can't imagine wanting to automate that part. It seems like buying a robot to go to the gym for you or hike Mt. Kilimanjaro for you. That said...I have seen some AI generated work that is really great...and where you can tell there was real intention and human creativity and direction behind it. That is pretty rare, though.

Well, that was a first. I was just contacted by some guy asking to buy a print of ‘the painting of the boy and his grandpa sitting on a wagon watching a rocket launch’…but tgat he coukdnt find it on my website. I replied that I never painted anything matching that description, and he sent me this obviously AI-generated rip-off of ‘The Unknown Awaits’. (Second image is my original painting). I know this gentleman meant well...he was genuinely looking for a legitimate way to get a print of an image he liked as a gift for his son...but this is going to be an interesting issue from now on.
