Vodafone said it highlights the potential of satellite technology to help close coverage gaps, strengthen network resilience and ensure people can stay connected in remote areas. Dedicated satellite phones can be large, heavy and expensive. As a result, they tend to be used only by people in specialist situations, such as long-distance sailors, alpine rescue teams and aid workers in disaster zones. This new technology means a regular smartphone can get access to internet and calls using satellites. Vodafone said it is now progressing further technical development and regulatory engagement, with a view to bringing satellite connectivity to customers as soon as possible.
