I wanted to rewrite and elaborate on an old theory craft post. "Could Emet-Selch have found a way" has haunted me since that scene and it's always fuelled my belief that Zenos' was created rather than born. Or at least, not in the traditional way. I fully believe Emet-Selch had a hand in interfering and he is a failed attempt at recreating Azem/raising a sundered Azem shard into a new body. I theorise that there is an FFVII adjacent story there, with Carosa serving as this stories Lucrecia. Zenos is after all, as Krile said, Ascian in all but name. A lot of things could be explained away with the handwave of "He's Emet-Selch's great-grandson" but to counter that - why do Varis, Nerva, Titus, Lucius...why do none of the other Galvus lineage have these same abilities? It is unlikely that it just simply skipped two whole generations on a family tree. Whilst the Resonant would explain some things, he didn't acquire that until he was 26 years old. He showcased ascian abilities even as a youth; he attempted to yield aether to master the Unyielding Blade techniques, he not only survived the attempt, he successfully wielded aether, something that should be genetically impossible for him as a Garlean. By employing a measure that should have killed him and is explicitly stated as such in the story as fatal: "His body’s aethereal balance could have been altered irreversibly, even fatally". Just to briefly touch on it too but the intellect from a young age, from the endless books read to mastering an foreign sword technique from observation alone, figuring out how to overcome his inability to wield aether, and utilising this knowledge to best his tutor - all at fourteen years of age. His dreams of the Final Days after reclaiming his body, his ability to hop from body to body, Elidibus fearing him and choosing to flee rather than fight, the ability to wield the power of a primal, to take the essence of the Mothercrystal...there's just so many parallels. It would also explain much of Varis' behaviour towards him beyond just the generational abuse cycle. We know from the opening lines of The Hunt Begins that he was always alone. It explicitly states - "From the beginning, Zenos was alone." Varis rejected him from birth and was content to allow his abuse and neglect. But why? We know from his relationships to other Garlean characters that Varis is not bereft of camaraderie or companionship. But his ire is focused solely on his son,throughout his entire life. But what if he didn't view him as his son, if he only viewed him as the monstrosity that the grandsire he loathed created. The abomination that killed his wife - something the short stories go out of their way to tell us is Carosa was his right hand - that grief would be overwhelming and manifest in hatred. Forced to masquerade something as your child when you only view it as the thing that killed your beloved. As an additional note, there is also the similarities to Emet-Selch rather than Varis. Whilst some of it could be explained by recessive genes, FF often have reasons for doing such things and don't do them arbitrarily.
