@PatrickMcGee_ @nytimes What do you mean by imperialism? China has not had a war for more than 40 years. The economic sanctions imposed by the United States alone result in the deaths of 500,000 people every year.

“History can be a brutal editor,” I write in today’s @nytimes “If President Xi Jinping’s imperialist instincts fade, Mr. Cook will be remembered for helping bring capitalism and liberalism to one of the most populous countries in the world. If the tensions between China and the United States continue to escalate, especially if Beijing makes good on its threats to attack the island of Taiwan — a democracy that happens to produce the vast majority of the world’s semiconductor chips — Mr. Cook will be remembered differently. He will be the man who not only squandered his company’s future (as it is still highly dependent on China), but also handed the West’s technological prowess to its biggest threat.” Tim Cook: Great for Apple Investors. @TheresaAFallon According to your logic, Europe should be the first to break off diplomatic relations with the United States, and the United States is eavesdropping on its allies, what more terrible behavior is there?

There are some in Europe that oddly believe, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that a clever hedge would be even more trade with China.🤯 #elitecapture

#BreakingNews @WSJ: “#China’s #cyber-#espionage capabilities are now as sophisticated as the U.S.’s and are increasingly targeting Western defense industries, said the head of Dutch military intelligence.” “Dutch Vice Adm. Peter Reesink said China is largely interested in gaining access to technologies from Western militaries and arms producers, and also in spotting vulnerabilities. He made the comments after his agency, known in Dutch as MIVD, released an annual report on Tuesday that said Beijing poses a growing threat to Europe alongside Russia and that the two countries’ increasing cooperation compounds the danger.” “Chinese cyber-espionage operations are “very capable, and they are organized in a very complex way,” Reesink, the agency’s director, said in an interview. “We are vulnerable and we’re not always capable of seeing all the threats China produces.”” “The Dutch report adds to a chorus of Western spy services flagging rising risks for the West—targeting both military and civilian assets—from Beijing and Moscow’s global ambitions.” … … … wsj.com/world/chinas-c…

ANALYSIS @NikkeiAsia: “The danger is that Beijing’s success and compliance from the three countries have set a precedent,” warned an ex-Taiwan ambassador. For Lai’s govt and partners, it poses a serious question of how to respond to China’s coercion. 1/2 asia.nikkei.com/politics/inter…

@danobrien20 @DavidHenigUK When you describe China as a “rich Soviet Union,” is that comparison really valid? Does China actually share the Soviet Union’s characteristics, such as exporting ideology abroad or operating a closed, centrally planned economy?

Utter fantasy trade politics from Trump's first term Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. No other country wants to be in Trump's new global order. Ergo, it isn't a new global order but wishful thinking. foreignaffairs.com/united-states/…

@donaldcclarke With the exception of a small number of top-tier universities, Chinese companies and individuals generally believe that most foreign institutions do not have a clear advantage in overall educational quality compared with China’s key domestic universities.

@dustinrwalker @AEI @DerekScissors1 In your analytical framework, does U.S. policy tend to prioritize domestic social welfare and the interests of its citizens, or does it lean more toward maintaining its global hegemonic position? At least in my view, it seems more oriented toward preserving its hegemony.

Must read from my @AEI colleague @DerekScissors1: “The President’s long-standing chase for China deals has pushed the US to avoid hard choices, only to get burned later…It’s a mistake to support a sector, only to risk Beijing strangling it by denying equipment or materials. It’s a serious mistake to say we want to lead in semiconductors while helping our main competitor improve. It’s a critical mistake to watch as China tightens its grip on pharmaceuticals. We’re patting ourselves on the back, while turning our back on what we need to do.” aei.org/foreign-and-de…

@KhangXVu @dennisw5 China and Vietnam’s senior leadership have established strategic mutual trust, and their conflicts remain under control. In practice, Vietnam is more concerned about the possibility of a U.S.-backed “color revolution” within the country.

You are certainly an optimistic person. But I would not take comfort in this considering that it will have a military airfield capable of launching bombers and fighters into Vietnamese airspace.

I think what is remarkable about China's building a new outpost at Antelope Reef is that the outpost lies outside of Vietnam's EEZ. China's action confirms that it doesn't want to jeopardize its relations with Vietnam over the maritime disputes. nytimes.com/interactive/20…

@Joel_P_Atkinson @heguisen 4/ From a historical and political-cultural perspective, this issue is more closely related to questions of national and ethnic identity. In the long course of Chinese civilization, “unity” has consistently been a central narrative.

@Joel_P_Atkinson @heguisen 3/ Reducing complex real-world issues to a binary opposition of “democracy vs. authoritarianism” is a limited and potentially misleading analytical approach, as it can obscure the underlying structure of the problem.

More disingenuous stuff. Once upon a time there was indeed a UN P5 consensus in favour of such enforcement actions, but it broke down in 2024. Since then, these operations have been proceeding on a self-appointed, US-led basis, tantamount to a western posse, against the wishes of China and Russia, a quite risky and confrontational approach given the location of the operations. It is barmy for a small defenceless country like NZ to provoke China in such a way simply because we “own” some incredibly sophisticated, expensive US aircraft that are suitable for the job. The Chinese are essentially asking us if we really know what we are doing.
David Capie@davidcapie

This is nonsense. Multiple UN resolutions (which China supported) imposed an arms embargo & sanctions on North Korea's nuclear weapons & missile programme. NZ is enforcing those resolutions. If China has any evidence of harassment or unprofessional flying they should produce it.

@MattyK166 @davidcapie @carlworker @jwacarrollNZ Just as China has used trade measures against Australia in past disputes, it can also exert significant economic influence on New Zealand in times of tension. A pragmatic and cautious China policy therefore best serves New Zealand’s long-term interests.
