Many people celebrate Memorial Day. For me, it’s a reminder of what could’ve been and the price we sometimes pay just for existing. My dad overdosed many years ago on Memorial Day.
So for me, this day has always been about reflection. Wondering what could’ve been. Thinking about the people who fought battles with addiction that many around them never fully understood.
I remember being a young man when I got the phone call. I can still replay it perfectly in my mind. Linkin Park blasting in the background. Me pacing around my mom’s kitchen like somehow my body already knew my world was about to change forever.
I don’t share this story for sympathy. We are far beyond that chapter of life now.
I share it because maybe someone else needs to hear they aren’t alone in moments of loss they never had control over.
For years, I thought it had something to do with me. It took decades to realize that life is not always about you, even within your own family. Sometimes people are carrying battles internally that nobody else can see.
Addiction is something many people struggle with, and sometimes the people around them end up carrying pieces of that pain for the rest of their lives.
If I had followed my father’s path, I can imagine an entirely different reality for myself. Instead, I used every painful lesson as fuel to fight my own battles differently. To choose life. To look forward to tomorrow. To appreciate the moments in front of me while they’re here.
So if you read this and it helped you in any way, I’m grateful.
And if not, thank you for taking the time to hear a piece of my story anyway.

To everyone out here in Massachusetts grinding every day who’s tired of the same priorities coming out of MassDems while hard-working families get absolutely crushed.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley is once again leading the charge on H.R. 40, the federal bill pushing for a commission to study reparations for descendants of enslaved people and she’s been very vocal lately saying America owes this debt and that “reparations now” is the goal.
Meanwhile back here at home, Beacon Hill Democrats keep telling us the same story: no room for tax relief, no ability to cut waste, and no real answers for the rising cost of living.
So, we’re left with sky-high taxes, housing that keeps getting less affordable, schools under pressure, and communities that don’t feel any safer, all while families are being stretched to the limit.
Businesses are leaving, young people are moving out, and one-party control just keeps producing the same results.
At some point you’ve got to ask the obvious questions: Where exactly is this money supposed to come from? And who is it actually going to?
We don’t need more commissions or more political talking points.
We need focus on the real problems people deal with every single day.
This is exactly what out-of-touch priorities look like.

When you call 911 to report a crime, you shouldn’t be put on hold.
Many Angelenos don’t trust official crime statistics, because when responses are slow, crimes don’t get reported.
On council, I’ve voted against contracts and projects pushed by powerful interests that have bankrupted the city and taken money away from basic city services. When I’m mayor, 911 calls will be answered immediately, and the right help will come quickly.
