@BPBlackMetal That is correct. At UNC Finley their team did effectively construct four new holes, but 3/4 were splices of the current routing. My takeaway: bold greens with many pin placements yield new strategic options even when the corridor is left untouched.

Per my subject matter expert (@DesignOnPar), Davis Love III’s formula for “redesigns” at clubs like Forest Oaks (pictured) and UNC Finley has been to take the existing routings and put emphasis on new green designs, rather than the road to them.

Had the privilege of welcoming @BPBlackMetal to NC golf yesterday @Forest_OaksCC. The par five 11th culminates in a thrilling Biarritz green - my favorite played. Thanks for carving out the time for a round BPBM!

@MsTurfMuscle The heavy rain is obviously a challenge but I am curious: are there aspects of the course’s design that make drainage more difficult? Does it have to do with old infrastructure? The architecture of the course? The clay-heavy soil base? Something else?

In #June, I was practically begging for #rain as I dragged my hose across the greens, trying to keep them alive in the heat. And well, I got my wish – but I didn’t expect all the challenges that came with it! Between #TropicalStormDebby in #September and #HurricaneHelene this past week, the #golfcourse has been soaked. Fairways and rough are struggling to drain, and we’re battling compaction issues on our greens. Keeping a public course in top shape 24/7 is tough enough, but throw in #MotherNature, and she brings on whole new challenges. We have limit carts to the paths and only mowing where possible, while tackling the rest with weed eaters and fly mowers. On the greens, we have been ninja tining for better drainage, topdressing for moisture absorption, and plugging away any damaged turf caused by standing water. We’re still fighting off fall armyworms in our rough and now, nuisance #ants have decided to join the party on our greens! 😱🤔 We also ended the week with an #irrigation leak 🫣. Despite all the chaos, I wouldn’t trade this job for anything. Every challenge keeps me on my toes and pushes me to adapt, making sure the course looks its best no matter what. #greenskeeper #superintendent #turf #dukeuniversity #johndeere #toro #golf
