5 2 Y E A R S A G O T H I S W E E K A F A M I L Y P O R T R A I T A T E A S T E R It was 52 years ago this week, during my Spring Break/ Easter week off from elementary school, the Greys landed a small silver ship in our half-acre back yard. It was only 11:00 in the morning. The Greys disembarked, one of them stood on our lawn by the open hatch, in his silver Ugg boots, and two of them, one short Grey and one tall Grey, marched into our house and took my whole family, except Dad, who was thirty miles away at work in Albany. Mom screamed as she saw them coming, she saw them first. Like, really screamed. I was only ten and a half when this happened, but in all my life since I've never heard a person scream like that. I ran to her from the other end of the house, I thought she was injured. She was in the kitchen which looks out on the backyard, and screamed again as she watched them approach, not to me, she was screaming to herself, I think. "They came back! Why do they have to come back?! Why do they always have to come back?!" Looking at her words today, certain things are clear: 1. She knew them. 2. She knew they had come for her before.* * she was abducted in the summer of 1959 in a triangle ship on a sunny afternoon, walking the dog on a public street. 3. She knew they had come for her many times before. 4. She knew them well enough to be scared out of her fucking mind about going through it again. I saw them. I didn't have a goddamn clue who or what these things were (even though they had been taking me since 1966. They don't let you remember them until they want you to remember them). They were halfway between who and what, they were monstrous in appearance, but the tall one was wearing a long black cloak, from his shoulders to the ground, and the two short ones were wearing uniforms, matching uniforms, which to me meant they were more than just 'monsters'. They were regimented. The short one was heading straight for the picture window where I was looking at him, and he was marching. Imagine, please, humor me here, imagine something both comical and horrifying at the same time, in almost equal measure. Almost. My first though was that this 'thing' couldn't really be alive. It had such little, skinny arms and legs, its limbs as thin as broomsticks, and I'm not exaggerating. Even ten year old me wondered how it can walk without any muscles in its legs, because there didn't seem to be any. Yet, here it is,swinging its one arm as it marched while the other arm was holding some device. I thought it looked like an awkward, ungainly puppet. As if it were the stop motion work of Ray Harryhausen. It looked like a toy soldier trying to be taken seriously. Unfortunately for us, it was a real soldier. And not the kind you fuck around with. But just look at him. His neck was also broomstick thin as his arms and legs were, and perched on that thinnest of necks was an enormous head that looked as if it could snap off under its own weight at any moment and fall on the lawn. His head was kind of egg-shaped, upside down, with the big rounded part at the top of his head, narrowing down to a delicate, almost pointed chin. And here's a reason it seemed comical, his head was as wide if not wider than his shoulders. It seemed unnaturally precarious. What he was wearing was a form-fitting black leotard covering arms legs and torso. Where it opened at the wrists and neck were silver metallic cuffs and collar, and a silver metallic belt, and silver but not metallic padded boots. I only had seconds to take in this scene as it was unfolding before my eyes, trying to make sense of it strained my reason. I had no idea what was happening. All three of them were staring directly at me, it was beyond creepy. Mom was hiding, her back to the wall next to the window so they couldn't see her, I'm assuming. She was panicked. And then I heard this strange voice, at first indistinct like an AM radio station in a different room. It became clearer and louder, and now it was right in the middle of my skull. Not left, not right, it was as if I had on the best headphones, in stereo. And the voice was saying this: "You will not be harmed. Remain where you are. Do not attempt to run. Do not scream (too late on that one). Do not try to leave the house, we will not hurt you." And it repeated. I was trying to think as it was buzzing in my head, they sounded a little like cops through a megaphone outside of a bank robbery in progress. The short one was walking right towards me, but aiming at the wall and picture window, but the tall one was getting close to the kitchen door, he was only about ten feet from the steps and making a beeline for the door, I knew I had to try to do something. So I went to beat the tall one in getting to the back door and lock him out! Mom saw what I was doing as she was running to grab my brother and hide upstairs, she shouted to me "That won't do anything!" More evidence Mom knows a lot about these creatures. As she ran upstairs with my 6 year old brother in tow, I lunged for the back door to lock it. I didn't make it. I took one step and was frozen in place, standing as still as a statue. I couldn't even turn my head. I could move only my eyes and I couldn't make a sound. You see, the Greys read your mind in real time, they hear your thoughts in the same moment you think them. When I thought of resisting, they heard it, and paralyzed me where I stood with their weaponized telepathy. Problem solved. I couldn't even fall over. They were holding me somehow balanced. All I could do was watch them come in. The tall Grey opened the outer storm door then the inner kitchen door and stepped in, ducking his 7 foot tall head to fit through the doorway. And the short one that was walking straight at the exterior wall of the house and picture window? He walked straight through the beams and siding and insulation and sheetrock of the house wall, and part of him, his right arm, shoulder and half his head walked straight through the plate glass picture window. And this, dear reader, is the exact moment I lost my fucking mind. It was too much. Too much for me. Up until the point he walked through the wall, I was almost okay. But now I stood alone, and standing whether I liked it or not, facing two very different beings, one of which came through the fucking wall. There was nothing I could do. They paralyzed me so I couldn't move and I couldn't speak. But as was having some kind of standing meltdown, something primal in me, something that happens when danger has taken you and you know you're trapped like an animal forced through and I could scream! I screamed! And the tall Grey now lunged for me. He was angry. He slapped his hand on top of my head, audibly, his over-long fingers wrap around and grip my head like you hold a grapefruit. He tilted my head back as he leaned down to me, forcing me to make eye contact, and he screamed in my mind "BE! QUIET!!" And I went quiet. I suddenly felt different. Sedate. Calm. It didn't even bother me when I watched the one who came through the wall levitate up and through the ceiling of the dining room, to get mom and my brothers who went upstairs to hide. They were hiding in a small attic crawlspace, between the dormer window walls and the roofline. It's an anger I'll carry forever, the thought of my mother and little brothers, hiding from these fucking captors in an attic like Anne Frank. Of course, the Franks died, horrifically. We didn't. We were lucky, we were just taken again and again and again. My brother Sean who was hiding in that attic space with mom remembers what happened next. The Grey who floated up through the ceiling/ floor went up to the second floor and through the roof, then he came down into that space, and said to them one thing: "You can't hide from us." I was still paralyzed as he brought down mom and my brothers, I couldn't turn my head to see them, only seeing them being led around me, out the door and across the yard to their ship. Then the tall Grey led me to the ship and inside. And this was the beginning of the biggest alien event and the craziest fucking day I would ever have.
