Please see my recent commentary on the urgent need to correct widespread misinformation relating to nicotine and relative risk of different tobacco and nicotine products, where I write: "While the scientific and medical understanding around nicotine is clear, the communication around it isn’t. Many people, including most health professionals, continue to mistakenly believe that nicotine itself causes the terrible health consequences we know come from the burning of tobacco. Many have also been misled to wrongly believe that certain reduced-risk products, such as e-cigarettes, are just as harmful as or even more dangerous than cigarettes, which dissuades many people who smoke from taking critical action that can dramatically reduce their risk." healthaffairs.org/sponsored-cont…
During the @GFNicotine #GFN24, we asked 26 volunteers to pose for a portrait photo; these people have similarities, such as having quit cigarette smoking through harm reduction products and being advocates for vastly safer alternatives to combustible tobacco. We abruptly surprised them during the shoot by offering a couple of cigarettes and photographing them. Some of them were surprised, some were not, and some despised the smell of cigarettes, but all of them expressed that they were not going back to smoking. Harm Reduction products offer a possibility for people unable or unwilling to quit smoking. As known, if you quit smoking before the age of 35, you drastically reduce the chances of suffering a smoking-related disease. So basically, these people are fighting for adults who smoke to have more time, time with their families, time with their loved ones, and time to enjoy their lives. We greatly respect the advocates who give so much of their lives to help others, and we kindly ask again for their forgiveness for putting cigarettes so close to their faces.
