These systems provide overlapping coverage that can reach eastern Kuwaiti airspace and adjacent Gulf waters at maximum range. The three F-15Es from a US squadron are conducting a combat air patrol or strike support mission over eastern Kuwait during the peak of Iranian ballistic-missile and drone salvos on March 1, 2026. Operating at medium altitude (20,000–30,000 ft) to conserve fuel and maintain radar coverage, the formation drifts 20–50 km east of Kuwait’s coast—placing them 150–180 km from an Iranian S-300 battery on the opposite shore. Kuwait’s small size means even “interior” missions near Ali Al Salem or Ahmed Al Jaber air bases can place aircraft within the outer envelope of Gulf-based Iranian radars. All three aircraft are hit in rapid succession because the S-300 battery is designed for multi-target salvos (up to six simultaneous engagements). Crews eject successfully over friendly territory. The incident occurs entirely within or immediately adjacent to Kuwaiti airspace, but the launch originates from Iranian soil—technically a cross-border engagement enabled by the narrow Gulf and Kuwait’s limited depth.
